:DWon't change anything but neither will queues at the pumps, blockades, riots, go slows or boycott xx's forecourts or any other conceivable protest.

Absolutely, thats why I never mentioned or considered any of the above either. Wouldnt want to be arrested under anti terrorism laws.
TBH, I run my car on waste veg oil anyway so it doesnt affect me that way.
But the fuel dutys affecting absolutely everything else. Goods to shops, NHS budgets, emergency services, the money spent on the railways, public transport costs.
Why is newspapers, books and magazines zero rated? Get it up to 20%
Everything else zero rated for VAT put it to the low rate.
Ultimately I'll still pay, but so will people that dont at the moment.

Yeah I might head off to Sainsburys with my 5 kids on the bus

With 5 kids, you're hardly in the majority. I'd love to be able to afford to raise 5 kids and have a car, must be nice.

I take on board the examples people have posted but you've nicely shown my point - you don't want your wife cycling home in the early hours - it's NICE to have a car, but not essential.

If you need to carry loads of gear in the car for work then you neatly fall into the group of commercial petrol users. You can use red diesel. Is that not fair enough?

There is no reason to argue with me and make the point that cars are nice and 'we all have a right to use one' and whatnot. I understand this just as well as anyone, I used to ride a motorbike and there is nothing better. What you miss is that in 20 years the choice will be taken away from us entirely.

We CAN'T transport tons of food via bicycle. You CAN cycle 14 miles. When petrol becomes prohibitively expensive you'll be doing it anyway...

On the 'shifting tax' issue. That's one of the reasons fuel duty is so high and I for one prefer it that way. You can minimize your liability for VAT, Fuel duty and VED. You can't minimize your liability for Income Tax.

Stick a 70% tax on TV, fiction and OK magazine, nil rate on educational books and magazines. Hell, subsidize them if you so wish. Give Britain the competitive edge.

You can - if you want to risk your vehicle being seized and a HUGE fine. Red is only available for things like tractors, works trucks that are general used off the public road and some road works, construction vehicles. Full list HERE.

And if "commercial petrol users" fill with any sort of diesel they won't get their tools very far!;)

I should post less while half asleep ;)
What I mean is, the law should be changed to allow it. Most people are responding to a post I made earlier about increasing fuel duty for people who don't actually need a car (driving 5 miles to work for example).

  • One thing I think Petrol stations should do is on their price boards display the cost of petrol before and after tax is added.Might open a few peoples eyes.

And lose the fuel company chairman his knighthood?, i should cocoa.
