Tax more on Alcohol,gambling & things that we dont need.We need fuel.Failing that,we must give a reduction in fuel duty to hauliers to keep down the cost of food.0

The lack of fuel protests at least in Wales, is probably due to the fact that one of the main instigators of the last lot of fuel protests was a certain Brynle Williams who is now a Conservative AM in the Welsh Assembly.0

To all saying about what would we tax instead of fuel to make up for it, consider this:
Tax on fuel should be going on ROADS. I concede that some of it can be spent on public transport, and even towards the emergency services, proportional to the amount of, for example, resource of police or hospital time is spent on roads issues. Tax from fuel SHOULD NOT be used to run the country with!
Next, of course, is that the price of fuel has been going up, and the tax has also been going up. The tax on fuel is meant to be being controlled to make the cost of fuel go up slightly ahead of inflation, as a device to save the planet (cough, or line the gov's pockets). So why is the tax not being brought DOWN when the price of the fuel rockets?! They're not controlling the price at all, they're sitting back and counting the pounds while the price goes through the roof!0 -
Commercial fuel duty (trucks, tractors, etc.) should be near enough zero.
Personal fuel duty should be 90%.
We need to save oil for essentials such as getting food in the shops, not to take the kids down the beach in the 4x4 'cause getting the train would be far too difficult.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

So how much of the fuel duty should we put onto fags encouraging more people to buy the dangerous Chinese counterfeit stuff?0 -

So what about people that stay in rural areas that need a car because there's little if no public transport?0 -

Use the tax from fuel duty to improve infrastructure for public transport.
Whether we add tax now or wait for the oil to run out, the result is the same. Anyone living in 'rural areas' (code for miles from civilization) is going to be in trouble.
I would say it's fair to give farmers tax breaks on fuel for personal use as they have no choice in living arrangements.
And yes, bus routes or train lines that make huge detours to get to houses in the middle of nowhere are not economical.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”

But then, really, it'll just go on "plugging the deficit" won't it (i.e. some more second homes
)
Indeed.
I do think that the rural issue is a bit overblown though. I'd be interested to compare petrol usage by city dwellers taking the car 5 miles down to work vs. people who genuinely have no choice.
I predict that property prices in commuter belts will drop when people start to realise that eventually the cost of petrol is going to outstrip the premium for inner city housing.Said Aristippus, “If you would learn to be subservient to the king you would not have to live on lentils.”
