what happens if you cant remember the account number of a joint account? i had one with my ex, it was my account to start with but i added is name, when we split he refused to remove his name and he was running debts up so i took my name off, two years ago now. i want to claim back charges for the time that my name was on it and i cant remember the account number, the halifax wont tell me what it was and i dont think that he is even using this account anymore, they wont even tell me if its still running.
we dont speak anymore as id kill him for the amount of debt he has left me in, so what can i do? where do i go? how can i get something back? please can anyone advise?0 -
Have had a reply from the joint account (now closed ) from HSBC that they will refund all charges but need ex's sinature before doing so..he will not reply says he's not bothered and will not sign anything should i give up on claim?
Thank you0 -
If you can't remember your account details you will need to call into a local branch. Take at least 2 forms of I.D. and ideally some old paperwork showing your old address. The counter staff can tell you your account number but not a lot else. If you have changed your address then fill in a change of address form while you are there as it saves a lot of time later. Alternatively you can write to the bank and ask them to look you up on their system but this takes a lot more time and effort just to get them to confirm the details and if the account was running 6 years ago you are potentially loosing time to claim back charges as they go past the 6 year cut off point that starts from the time of your first request for charges to be paid.
You should be able to make a 'join' claim without the 2nd signature as you were an authorised signature on the account. If the account is now closed, all the better, especially if it was still a join account when it closed as they will not check to see if you are still together!
If you had split before it was closed or your ex is still running the account you may need to get a declaration off your ex saying something like this...I, ...them..., here by authorise ...you... to act on my behalf in claiming our joint charges in our claim against XYZ Bank.
All funds retrieved in this claim should be made payable in equal part to ...you... and ...them...
Get them to sign 2 copies, 1 to send to the bank and 1 for your records.
If they don't want to know about the claim then change the last bit to say all funds should be made payable to you!
A change of address for you should not affect your ex partners details as they can record 2 (or more) current address's on their systems.
If the account was split before it closed or your ex still runs it, I'm not sure the bank can legally send you all the statements from the time after your name was taken off the account but I'm sure they will as their right hand won't know what their left is doing! But on the plus side you may have court documentation saying that you are legally allowed (at least some of) this information as sometimes in a divorce case each party is asked to declare their financial position to the other party which can include bank statements.Got It & Spent It :dance:IKEA CARD = £120 charges = £175 received (146%)MARBLES = £450 charges = £370 received (82%)I.F. = £494 charges = £494 received (100%)CAPITAL ONE = £981 charges = £1,489.03 (152%)BARCLAYCARD = £580 charges = £786.12 (136%)On Hold :mad:A+L = £722 charges (target = 147%)BARCLAYS = £1,405 charges (target = 128%)BARCLAYS = £175 charges (target = 140%)ABBEY = £3,220 charges (target = 148%)0 -

Forge it...
I didnt say that but this to me is the banks way of playing games, 90% of couple who split dont usually do so on good terms, therefore it could be difficult for the individual to get another signature.
Some banks seem to pay up without requesting the other signature, others want to be awkward, Id just practice & slap their signature on, who knows any dif...

You must ensure that the bank has your address and not anyone else's as there was a report of a user who claimed and as the ex's name and address was still on the account the reclaimed money was paid to the ex.0

You must be aware that if the account is still open and your ex is using it the bank may pay them the money. I think Edinburghlass is recalling the person that got about £3,500 in charges back only to find that their ex had used it to book a holiday as it had got paid into the account that they no longer had access to!Got It & Spent It :dance:IKEA CARD = £120 charges = £175 received (146%)MARBLES = £450 charges = £370 received (82%)I.F. = £494 charges = £494 received (100%)CAPITAL ONE = £981 charges = £1,489.03 (152%)BARCLAYCARD = £580 charges = £786.12 (136%)On Hold :mad:A+L = £722 charges (target = 147%)BARCLAYS = £1,405 charges (target = 128%)BARCLAYS = £175 charges (target = 140%)ABBEY = £3,220 charges (target = 148%)0 -
I have a joint account with my ex partner. I have had a letter from the bank saying that he wishes to close it and asking me to sign a form agreeing to this. I no longer use the account and have no problem with it being closed.
But, due to my ex-partners mismanagement of money ££££'s have been paid in charges. I was left with a large loan that I had taken out to clear his debts and if I could get a refund of the charges, this would be a significant help.
My questions are -
1 if the account is closed, will I still be able to make a claim for the bank charges?
2 as it is a joint account, if I do make a claim after the account is closed, will he be informed and
3 will I have to split it with him? (I want it to pay off the debts, but he will just spend it and leave me to see to the debt anyway)
ThanksI'm a retired employment solicitor. Hopefully some of my comments might be useful, but they are only my opinion and not intended as legal advice.0 -
u can still claim weather your account is closed or not, but not sure about the joined account thing0

Have a read of the previous posts for other user's experiences regarding joint accounts with an ex partner. It could be that your ex partner might be thinking about claiming and this is why he wants the account closed so I would think very carefully before agreeing to close the account at this time.0
