New Comps Board Guidelines Discussion

if we go back to how it was then the using of regs board and not allowing end dates to be invented so a comp can go on main needs to be enforced by the bgs, however when bgs try to do that there is a massive outcry and complaints about comps being hidden on regs.
no matter what we need to know the definition of regular...ongoing works but there is confusion over what an ongoing comp is. daily/weekly/monthly end dates are used to post each comp every day/week/month on main instead of in an ongoing thread in regs, which means they cannot be added to the stickies and if/when they are added to stickies and future posts are merged/moved to regs there is again an uproar about comps being hidden on regs and not on main.
i would love to go back to all ongoing comps being on regs, promotions with an end date can go on main and be linked in the sticky form there (instead of as was some on main and some on regs with those on main, in some cases, NOT being added to the stickies because if they were added they were moved to regs)....that much works. what was not working 6 mths ago, and is causing the most hassle now are the ongoing comps which continue but are replaced by new details every day, week or month.
what is the solution for them? continue to post them as new comps each time, so there continues to be some reg entry comps posted as new threads every day/week/month and others posted as ongoing threads and updated with new details each time? continue with all the comments about hope its not hidden in regs to quickly? and the comments about this should have been added to the stickies and merge requests leading to more comments about its not really a daily/weekly/monthly because something changes each time?
to be honest i feel we need to get a deffinition of what is an ongoing comp, decide if we are going to treat daily different form weekly and/or form monthly ongoing promotions and then go from there with deciding on where.
i still feel regs board was introduced in the first place for a reason and i still think that moving everything to main would cause main to be a nightmare, even with a never to be reached end date.0 -
Could I just point out that the reason this discussion has raised its head again, was that MSE Andrea had not finished updating her guidelines for posting comps - when she first posted them they were not conclusive. Some people who were posting ongoing comps in the Regs board were still getting accused of hiding comps from the main board. However her latest update, would have caused chaos.
Her latest guidelines, stated that every daily comps should be reposted as a new thread every 24 hours, every weekly reposted every week, and every month reposted every month, for both End Date and Ongoing comps is the way we should go? Because that made it impossible to for the Sticky OPs to be able to keep up with thread links, and also that all the ongoing comp moved to main with guessenddates...
After she had some pms, and read through some posts, she asked for us compers to draw up guidelines which would work for us all, instead of her.
But yes, I will agree I wish that when this all reared its head 6 mths ago, and Glad was asking how to tell what was a Reg, that I wish some of the other BGs had known the answer then. And if I could roll back time and get all the d/w/m off the main board I would, but I am making my comping fit around what was the majority wish of Rest on main board. And I completely agree that just one click was never to much to ask of people. My light may be on, but that doesn't always mean I am looking at the PC - I am far more likely to be cuddling or feeding Tianna atm, so please don't think I am ignoring you if I don't reply quickly

You cannot define a reg as everyones perception of reg is different, not everything fits into a slot x
Surely whatever board it ends up on as long as it gets added to relevant sticky that should suit, as all u have to do is check the relevant sticky.
Unless i'm over simplifying it, i green tick it once as i see it on main board, then as i check daily thread every day , weeklies weekly and monthlies montly i catch it again in it's thread x
There's always going to be exceptions to every rule and that's when u ask a bg what they think xxx

You could list all the types of comp that it's contentious about whether it is/isn't a regular and run a "is this a regular yes or no" type poll though. And then you would have a list of what is/isn't a reg according to majority vote.
OK some may not be on the list. But at least we'd have a better idea what people want rather than it depending who posts

not all comps can be made to fit into one slot, but if we come up with a general consensus then a lot of them will, and people can then be educated about how to post them
yep the key is adding the thread to the relevant sticky, its the issue of if they should be posted as new threads each day or week or month or as ongoing threads that causes issues with that, more so when they end up posted as both types of threads so can be duped :cool:0 -
The problem is making sure new posts are linked correctly from the main board to the regular sticky (with an expiry date for removal from the thread)Wishing you all good luck!

An idea struck me - so I'm writing it down before it goes.
When you are posting a comp and click on the 'link' button (world with a chain) - the box appears with "http://" already in the box.
If possible - for our main board - how about when you click on the 'New Thread' button the title box appears with the "E: dd/mm" already in the box.
You could C&P over it or change it to whatever you want (including E: 99/99). I believe it wouldn't get in the way of experienced posters, but could help those less experienced get the format right - so saving bumping and PM's to get the format right - or work by BG's to edit an end date in where the OP doesn't respond.0 -
Ok , for what it is worth, my twopenneth .
I get that some peeps aren't happy with the way the board works but I post & enter comps & have never had a problem checking the regs board or using the main board. Seems to me that the people that have the task of editing, merging and fine tuning the comps forums are the people we should be listening to, I wouldn't want to undertake the thankless task of a BG . So, I say if Glad, Diva , Darren & Heather can come up with something between then we should appreciate their effort and go with it. Up till recently the comps board has been most definatley the friendliest on MSE now it seems like bickering has turned it around. Never will a solution please everyone, that we all know is true . So whilst I'm here ..... :T:beer::T for our fabby BG's who keep the forum running smoothly .

I can't disagree with any of that
I would be happy if new (or at least updated) rules were agreed by the BGs OR if we can decide them ourselves based on polls OR if we can go back to how it was but follow the rules that we otherwise strictly adhere to re being nice and not duping.
My preference would be one of the first 2 because even if we ask a BG when we're not sure different BGs will give different opinions about if some comps are regulars....as without any definitions they can only go by their own interpretation of what a regular is same as the rest of us. Just my opinion though
I like your suggestion too One-Eye (about new threads starting E: dd/mm automatically) although I have absolutely no idea how easy that would be to make happen?0 -
would the ongoing tag not work in the same way as E: 99/99 ? thus anything with ongoing would be sorted and show after all the E: 02/02 etc?
would posting all ongoings on main then cause lots of extra threads to sift through for people who dont sort by end date?
why was the regs board set up in the first place?
perhaps before we discus the issue of regs versus main for promotions with no end date we really need to decide what promotions are considered regs? if promos identified as weekly by the site running them are going to continue to be "not really a weekly" so dont need added to the sticky/posted as an ongoing thread and posted new each time then they will go in main anyway with that weeks end date. likewise dailies and monthlies.....unless we decide that dailies are to be treated differently to weeklies and/or to monthlies.
im using weekly instead of writing all 3 regular periods out each time.
no matter what is decided there will still be some posts that fit all 3 regular stickies. a weekly entry promotion with one prize draw on xx date will still need linking for those who do like to enter these every week for the extra entry. likewise with dailies and monthlies. these, posted on either board and linked in the stickies are not the problem i dont think?
the problem are those that are weekly but have a different question or prize or url each week. some of us see these as ongoing comps, so posted in regs and updated threads each week. others see them as new each week, even where they are called a weekly comp on the site, so post them on main every week.
the problem with them being in an ongoing thread is that people who dont see it via the sticky threads or when it was newly posted may then miss the bumps updating it with new info.
the problem with it being new each week is it cannot then be linked in the sticky without the link being changed each week. it is enough work maintaining the stickies without asking for the links to be changed for the comps already in there too.0
