It might have a negative impact on a small number of houses - but I don't see it bringing down the whole area.

People are just negative for negative sake!!!

Au contraire, I see the housing market crash in a very positive way. It is making homes more affordable, and that is a very good thing. :):):)

I never understand people who cheer house price rises. There is no other item - oil, gas, food, clothes etc - that people want to see rising in price. It is just weird.

@michelle2008 "Traffic management will be the main issue - more speed bumps for the side streets no doubt"

Anymore speedbumpos on our street and it will just be a flat road again lol

I think I'll just have to sit back and take it as it comes. Can't help being nosey.

Hi guys, i live only across from the site, and i can confirm that it is Tesco going into and that it will be there biggest format of store Tesco Extra, there are jobs out already for just look for Belfast Castlereagh Rd Extra - Optician Manager under Optician- Store section

Should be interesting early next year or before should be when it will open, sad time though that the mill is now all gone :( but better for it.

the supermarket application has been granted Z/2008/0692/F
  • I wonder on what basis this application can be approved?!? I think that very few people, if anybody, on Castlereagh Rd would want a super store there. One or more small stores would be fine, preferably independent grocers and retailers, but no need for another monster when there already are three in the area, along the carriageway (2 tescos and 1 sainsburys at forestside). This is just part of Tesco's plans to grab land and keep competitors out. And looks like they got our politicians in their (big) pockets!!

Totally agree that smaller independent shops would have been better. It's just going to be a stop off for people passing through and no good for the community as a whole.

I drive along the Castlereagh Road every day, compared to other Main Roads in the East of the city, there are a vast number of empty shops on the road and there is very little foot traffic around.

The new Super Store, in my opinion, can only boost the community, bringing additional small businesses in its wake, to fill the vacant shops and encouraging more people into the area. Yes there has to be an increase in traffic, but it is a main road and should be able to cope. When the main entrance to Connswater Shopping Centre was in Bloomfield Avenue, the small businesses in the Avenue seemed to thrive, now when there are other entrances to the Centre, some shops in Bloomfield Avenue seem to be closing or changing hands. Access here via Castlereagh Road should benefit businesses in the area.

Castlereagh Road has not had a supermarket since the days of Stewarts, so I think it is about time it had one and this can only benefit the community as a whole. Many of the older folk who come into my shop are very much looking forward to a Supermarket within walking distance and we are almost a mile away!
DJWW - cos we won't let it!
  • There is a big difference between Stewarts and a Tesco Super Store. An express grocery store like Tesco Extra or M&S Simply food would have been sufficient, with the rest of the site going to housing and a few independent stores. It is a very bad location for a monster superstore and associated car park.
