Tesco Super Store - Castlereagh Road

Does anyone know what's going on regarding the proposed Tesco Superstore due to be built on 160-220 Castlereagh Road?
Workmen have been on site for 2 or 3 weeks now demolishing the old mill and for the first week or so there was a Tesco sign on the hoardings.
Then the sign mystriously vanished and I have today received a letter from the planning people telling me an application to build 2 detached dwellings, 16 semi detached dwellings, 40 townhouses and 125 apartments on the same site has been received.
Insofar as Tesco applied in 2008 to build here and they GOT planning permission back in 2010, does anyone know what's prompted the council to suddenly change their mind?
Online papers at the planning department's website indicate there were no public objections, so what's happened?
I do know that Tesco are appealing the decision in April 2011, but that's as much as I've been able to learn. Can anyone provide any more info?

I passed this site today. There were 5 workmen standing at the fence and they were all wearing hi-vis jackets with the Tesco logo on them.0

Is it a precuation incase the planning permission is refused?0

I recall reading about so-called 'Tesco Towns' being built in England - this couldn't be them building property here?
Just a thought...0 -
The talk in our wee coffee shop (just up the road) is that the houses are in addition to the Tesco Store!
No idea if this is true or not, just what some locals were saying this week.DJWW - cos we won't let it!0 -
There is going to be a store on the castlereagh road due to open later this year.0

I contacted planning office today. They have received an outline application for housing for the site - it is from the same applicant that lodged the applicaiton for the supermarket (santon group). The housing development is for the whole site - you can see a map on the planning service's webpage - it looks like a good development - not too dense. However as others have said - the tesco men were there again today!!0

Major planning application – proposed superstore and assoicated works on land at 160-220 Castlereagh Road, Belfast, for Santon Group Developments (Z/2006/2018/F)
The Department has issued a notice under Article 31(3) of the Planning Order stating that in its opinion this major planning application should be refused. The applicant has requested a hearing before the Commission.
The hearing will open at 10.00am on Tuesday, 19th April 2011 in the Commission's premises at Park House, 87-91 Great Victoria Street, Belfast and will continue if necessary on the following day.Dave0 -
This site has quite a planning history. The design concept document for the lastest residential application lists the planning permissions in place and the applications refused - there appears to be more recent retail applications which have been approved (z/2008/0692/f).
I haven'e been able to clarify how many of these planning permissions remain live - or whether the existing appeal to the PACNI is simply about a version of the supermarket plan or about the whole concept.
I guess time will tell!0 -
Oh dear. This is such an up and coming area hopefully the council and developers dont blow this great opportunity. As long as there are no offices. Personally I was in two minds about tesco. In one hand it would be handy for me but I say that the traffic would increase dramatically through our street which is nearly opposite. I beleive they applied for an extra road to be built down the back of houses through to the cregagh/Woodstock road which was refused by residents. Best decision!
I would have loved for a row of smaller shops which could accommodate local businesses, a Starbucks or something.
Let's hope it doesn't bring pubs, drunk people etc!
