BT broadband problems

This is rather long but we are moving from BE to BT.

Our change over date was 8 march. On the 8 march we were told there was a technical problem downloading the broadband to our line.

The following day after 11/2 hr on the phone, mostly on hold!, we were told that somehow our broadband request had been cancelled, they would put it back through and expedite it to 48 hrs.

48 hrs on and we still haven't got broadband and are being told that it will be 16 march.

I am at the end of my tether, nobody rings us back, we are told different things each time and we can not get a manager to take responsibility.

From what I've learnt from working for BBand companies, once you put a cancel request on a phone or broadband line, known as a 'Cease Order', the cease must be completed fully before it can be re-ordered.
In fact,I'm currently on a training course for a BBand ISP & we were told that today during death by powerpoint.

I think you're correct on that one Spike - something to do with the BT system only allowing one work order per line at a time but there is nothing to say there is a cease in progress - I'd assume that it's just a standard migration but as it's LLU to BT it involves moving wires and they didn't fit it in when they should have.

If it is a cease then it could take absolutely ages.

This should be as you say a standard LLU migration - yes wires need to be moved in the exchange from one box to another but really this shouldn't be taking THIS long... If they put an expedite on the line (usually charged at £100 + VAT lol so if it makes you feel better BT are getting charged this by BT wholesale (not the same...))
Get onto BT again and pester them :)

    Probably 50p a month cheaper. :(

Unfortunately many people treat broadband as a commodity thinking that just as most electricity providers are useless but at least the product is the same then so are ISPs and the connections they provide.

Add to that ADSL comes down the phone and BT own the infrastructure so many further assume that they are cutting out middlemen and will get the best service from BT as an ISP.

They are, of course, badly mistaken.

Actually... BT don't own the infrastructure... BT Wholesale do... BTinternet (who you would buy BB from) are no different than any other ISP (and if at any point they are proven to get preferential treatment the fines involved are astronomical!) and like other ISPs buy service etc from wholesale :)
Then you have the fact that some ISPs like Talktalk and others of that size have their own equipment in the exchanges which does not belong to BT and are rarely the same manufacturer as BTs and suddenly there are some areas in which other ISPs will do better... (this mainly applies to LLU)

BT OpenReach own the lines and they are common to BT and LLU.

You (and I) realise that BT is not a single company but the vast majority of the public don't and that is presumably why they choose BT as their ISP.
