BT OpenReach own the lines and they are common to BT and LLU.

You (and I) realise that BT is not a single company but the vast majority of the public don't and that is presumably why they choose BT as their ISP.

As I learnt yesterday on the course,it's a bit more complicated that that.

BT Openreach own & maintain the lines from the NTE to the entry point in the MDF,where the line enters the exchange. From the exit point of the MDF,it's BT Wholesale who own & are responsible for the infrastructure & all the kit in the exchange.

It's a real dogs breakfast forced on BT by OfCom. Although intended to ensure that other operators get a fair crack of the whip in practice all it's done is produce huge price and performance differentials depending on where you live which are in addition to long line problems which can only be fixed by using different technology.

If I hadn't given up on BT's inability to fix my line and moved to cable the only two operators I would consider are both LLU - Be and Sky. I used to be on O2 but their new contracts no longer look good value to me.

Agreed, all the competition have done is cherry picked the high usage area's, leaving us on smaller exchanges with very little choice.

Yup,I'm 6 miles outside Bangor NI & in a fairly large seaside town. All I can get from my exchange is O2 or BT & that's it.Suprisingly however, the are a fair percentage of people I know who are on the IP Stream products & not LLU...Go figure..

You may or may not be happy to know Talktalk are planning on rolling out to I think it's something huge like 500-1000 more exchanges... ofcourse you will then have to decide if you want to deal with their customer support :)

The reason the small exchanges are not LLU enabled is PURE cost... it would take years to recoup the cost of LLU enabling a small exchange for an ISP and therefor it's taken a long time to get to them. Ofcourse if you live 6 miles from the exchange (cable length.. not as the crow flies!) then you will always have performance problems anyway... :)

I work for an ISP and get my BB from BT as no-one else offered FTTC when BT rolled out infinity here - including my employer... :) apart from the instal botch there haven't been any major problems... :)

The problem with TalkTalk is that going with them seems to be one huge gamble. For many that gamble pays off and the get trouble free cheap inteernet and phone but for significant numbers what they get is a pile of trouble that takes an age to sort out.

If I moved out of a cable area or my area became one of the seemingly many that are heavily over subscribed then I think I'd stick with BT for the line and calls and check carefully what internet providers were available. I had problems with an alternate phone provider years ago and the savings just aren't worth the possible problems imo.

Thanks, but I would sooner have my eyes gouged out than deal with Talk Talk.;)

Well thanks for all the replies. I have taken so long to get back as I have not had internet!!

BE have stopped our package and also it wasn't that good at all. Forever crashing.

BT have been an absolute joke. I have been told different things from different people all the time. It turns out our order was not accelerated as I was promised!! Don't go to BT!!

What makes you think BT will be any better than Be? Both products are delivered along the same copper phone line which was almost certainly the cause of your problems. With Be at least the basic product was good.
