Indesit & Callout fees

I bought an Indesit washing machine 5 months ago and it has recently been leaking oil.

I have called up Indesit and there service has been pretty dire. They are saying if the problem isn't a manufacturers defect they will charge a £105 callout fee, and also if a problem isn't found, a £45 "Engineers waste of time" fee.

They then went on to offer a £5 a month cover plan to protect us if this was the case.

Does this sound like a likely thing to occur or are they just trying to scare us into the care plan?

Thanks.

Did you buy the machine direct from Indesit? Or from a high street retailer, or on-line company?

We had an indesit machine and the engineer must have come out at least 20 times over 2 years

Might be worth while getting a quote from a local repairman. Will probably come to less than the callout charge, or failing that, start the insurance at £5 then cancel after it's fixed. :D
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

Indesit's website, while it does offer engineer calls, shows no sign of selling their products directly to customers. Instead they have a search facility to find your nearest stockist.

So it's highly likely that the OP bought from a retail outlet of some description.

As such, his contract is with that company and he should contact them about the leak while under guarantee.

Dire advice. The OP needs to revert to the retailer and ask for a remedy under the Sale of Goods Act 1979.

All indesit are saying if you have brokedn it you pay, if there is nothing wrong you pay.

If as you say it has a fault then they will repair it, all sounds perectly reasonable to me.

Why get worked up about it?

And just add someone else into the loop to increase the hassle factor.

    From Consumer Direct:-

Who do I claim a refund, repair or replacement from?

Your contract is with the trader and not the manufacturer and you should always go back to them to make a claim under the Sale of Goods Act. However if you have paid for goods using a credit agreement like a Hire Purchase Agreement then your rights are different and you should call Consumer Direct for further advice.

So does that make it the simplest way to sort out the problem?

You contact the retailer who then contacts the same engineer (you would call) who then gives the retailer a time who then relay that time to you for you to say that time is not suitable. Repeat as necssary.

Where as you could just deal direct.

Sometimes a little common sense is required and not to rely on the letter of the law.

The huge difference is that if the retailer arranges for the engineer under the SOGA then the retailer pays for the repair!
