coils are one of the main causes of female infertility.. you may as well be sterilised. not everyone is able to have one fitted

It isn't just infection either, it is possible they dislodge and perforate the uterine wall, bladder or bowel, cause severe infection, ectopic pregnancy if you do conceive or haemorrhage.

absolute rubbish, pls quote me th evidence you have in misinforming people with this statement or accept THIS IS YOUR OPINION!!!
NOT EVIDENCE BASED, I HOPE TO GOD YOU ARE NOT A MEDIC

    QUOTE]

They can dislodge and all the other things she said, I was told all this by the doctor who put mine in and the 4 different doctors I saw to get the bloody thing out

i'm not going to argue for the sake of arguing but your gp is covering his ars* warning you about all these complications in fact the risk is minimal

-the risk of ectopic and failure is the SAME as sterilisation

-if you are in a regular relationship the risk of infection is pretty much zero, i have a study i can quote you but it is at work, get it for monday

-there is no risk of perforation of the bowel, potentially there is a small risk of perforation of the womb DURING FITTING (requiring a laparoscopic procedure to fix)but this is so rare the royal college are now removing this from the guidance drs give to patients (there is NO risk of perforation to the bowel)

-the hormone released is so tiny it is like taking one contraceptive tablet every 2-3 weeks if that

Trick is to find an experienced fitter -go to a family planning clinic, sound slike you have ha a bad experience and i sympathis but there are MANY out there with good experiences, i know it is not perfect and not for everyone but people have such misconceptions of it.

I have lost count of the number of patients i see coming in to ask for reversal of sterilsation or vasectomies.......
GRATITUDE WHEN GIVEN, PATIENCE WHEN DENIED

My GP tried to persuade me to try the Mirena coil after my DS2 was born, before OH had the snip. She gave me the manufacturers leaflet (very similar to that in the link above) about it, which I read and it really put me off!

As for the info that the oestrogen-like hormone it gives off is equal to one contraceptive pill a week/fortnight is carp! It gives off 20 mcg a day, which is only slightly less than the pill (generally 30-45 mcg).

    Back to the OP!
As for the snip - well as someone else said above I didn't feel a thing!:D. OH needed to have a general though as his skin was quite tight and the Dr felt that a local would cause him more chance of moving during the op. He was in for 9am and I picked him up at about 1.30pm that day. Apart from a legs-akimbo walk he was just a bit drowsy after the anaesthetic. As for the pain, paracetamol for about a day then he was fine. Obviously moving was a bit sore, but no great moans from him. One thing we were told though is that it generally takes 20-25 ejaculates to clear out the sperm, so the sooner this happens the sooner you'll get the all clear ;)!

    It's only a game

I highly agree with that in bold, I read alot of bad reviews about the coil online after doin research as I was wanting one fitted and there is only one doctor in my surgery who will do the fittings and that must be cos she is most confident and 'good at it'.. I have absolutely no worries - having read the leaflet with the listed risks and accurate statistics and compared to the things that people have written...I'd stick with the leaflet and the drs chat.

I had the snip 11 yrs ago and it was painless apart from a the bruising and a couple of weeks mild discomfort, i went in at 10.30 on a Sunday morning and i was sitting in the pub by 12.30 and driving my truck to Barcelona 3 days later.
On the other hand, a friend of mine caught an infection and his balls grew to the size of grapefruits, he was ill for about 3 months.

Me and my hubby have been having this talk too! Our Doctors have both said that we would both need to be over 30 before he will even consider a referal

I had a 'debate' with my doc to get referred too. I was 29 and single with an 11 year old. There was the whole argument of what is something happened to her. A sharp reminder that you cannot replace one child with another put paid to that. The other argument was that I might remarry and my partner may want kids - response my 'perfect' man does not want kids! Did remarry, he doesnt want kids lol

I was actually 30 when it was done though; maybe we become responsible at 30 lol:rotfl:

I know a lot of people for whom the snip has been fine, but my boyfriend was booked in for one years ago when he thought he had completed his family and we are now trying for a baby. Relationships break up and circumstances change and therefore I wouldn't encourage any male friends of mine to go down that route.

  • My ex husband got the snip after our daughter was born as he didn't want anymore children & I was fed up of being on the Depo jab due to weight gain.

He didn't even have to go to hospital as our GP did it at the surgery & despite being sore for a couple of days it was fine.

Tbh I think it's the least a man can do after the woman has to put up with periods & go through childbirth.

I do remember that I had to go see the GP with him though as they like to make sure that you both agree to have the procedure.
I'd rather regret the things I've done than regret the things I haven't done.
