My daughter had keyhole surgery sterilisation, in for the op in the morning and home in the afternoon... bit of discomfort for a couple of days and then nothing... she says it was a doddle... such a weight off her mind too...#6 of the SKI-ers Club :j

I've been sterilised and the only advice I can give is take all the sedation that you can! I had a local anaesthetic and found it so distressing, that they had to knock me out. It wasn't a pleasant sensation when they pumped the abdominal area full of air. I thought I was going to suffocate.
Still glad I had it done, though!From Starrystarrynight to Starrystarrynight1 and now I'm back...don't have a clue how!0 -

I'm actually more worried about him! I think he has agreed to it without researching the possible side effects and I do want him to be fully informed of the risks himself.
We are trying to be MSE and I'm therefore trying to get mine done on the NHS, but since we are only turning 30 this year and have no children, it's a bit of an argument and in the end I might have to pay Marie Stopes. Yes, we are absolutely sure that we never want children - and also have agreed that we would adopt in the very very unlikely event of us both changing our minds. I have convinced my GP so far so the next step is referral to a specialist. On the other hand, the private vasectomy is not as expensive so I think we will just have that done at MS, rather than having the same argument with is (different) GP.
In absolutely no way am I disputing your statement above but there is the posibility that people can be refused adpotion...even what seems to be suitable 'candidates' but then if you have given up your fertility, this might be hard to accept..like you say if you ever changed your minds....just a thought....0 -
General vs local? No contest.
DH was uncomfortable for a couple of days and that was that.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0 -
Sterilisation sounds awful, I don't have children but I am a wimp and just couldn't put myself through it. To be honest though, most of the ladies with children have been through pregnancy and giving birth and the lasting physical affects of it. I think that with 'the snip' having a much higher success rate, it is the very least that the man could do.
If your OH wants you to go with him then it shouldn't be a problem. Might be worth it to find out about aftercare too.0 -
Hubby told me that as I had taken care of contraception for years and years, it was his time to take a turn. And he did.0

My other half had a vasectomy when our youngest was 3 months old. I didn't want him to have it done but he went ahead anyway. It didn't go to plan, his tubes aren't in the bog standard place, there was a lot of 'rummaging', he was on crutches afterwards...

Personally I think you should both think about if there is a chance you may want kids in the future if the other one wasn't around, so if one of you got hit by a bus and the surviving spouse remarried would they want kids. If he says maybe and you say no, I've got my kids wouldn't want anymore ever (or vice versa) then the one who is definate that THEY want no kids get sterilised, if you bth think no way, no how then either toss a coin or both go to GP and discuss your options and go for one with shorter waiting list0

Keyhole sterilisation for me. In and out the same day even with a general anaesthetic. Couple of days off work, right as rain, no probs....
It is a TAD disconcerting though when your Doc says 'this is permanent you know etc etc etc' and the Consultant says 'you do know 1 in 200 fail dont you??!!' All good so far though lol Think 7 years is enough to tell? lolLight Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
I decided on Vasectomy as it was a simple procedure for me, but the equivalent was much more complicated for the mrs, tbh was a doddle and the entire procedure was done and dusted in 15 minutes, the only disconcerting bit was when I smelt some burning flesh and twigged it was me!, I was back to work the following day.
I have felt more discomfort after a gym session, however I did go private at Marie Stopes which may make a difference, it cost £440, but they offer a discount during vasectomy week!.
There was an unexpected bonus, as I ran over an anti-abortion campaigner on the way in to the clinic car park.
It was the best money I have ever spent I wish I had it done when I was 18 it would have saved a whole heap of worry.0
