Vasectomy Vs Sterilisation

Vasectomy has a 1 in 2000 chance of failure (ie the woman getting pregnant)

For female sterilisation it is 1 in 200 chance of pregnancy (similar to the pill).

There is a new procedure for women called Essure which is less invasive, which may be worth a look and has been approved by NICE - try googling Essure and hysteroscopic sterilisation for more info.

(I have been researching this recently, not ready to shut the door permanently just yet, just exploring options) ;)

Tell him to man up and get the chop, I mean, at least the guy can see what hes doing.
(clutches at way to get the painting the hall through the letterbox joke in)
I had the chop 15 years ago, just a couple of days discomfort, however a friend did spend a week in agony sitting with a VERY tender pair of galia melons in his lap.

I wouldn't mind going to the GP with him, or even being there when it's done but I don't know if that would be allowed?

I drove OH there and back and sat in the waiting room reading a Bella magazine while he was being 'done'. Not sure they would have let me in - like a previous poster I didn't ask :D

Wow, just read the procedure for that and it sounds fab! Not sure it's available on the NHS though as I couldn't find much info on it?

If you have any links would you mind posting them please? :)

He's all set to get it done so doesn't need to man up ~ it's me that's considering all the possibilities ;)

Shell - if he's well informed and is happy to have it done, let him do it. My GP practice has a visiting surgeon every month or so who does a whole bunch of blokes in one session in the practice minor ops theatre, so it's not exactly Holby City big dramas ;)
I was sterilised back in the '80's, my choice because I'm a control freak :o Even back then, I checked in at the private hospital at 7am and was home at 10 the next morning. Nowadays I believe it's frequently done as a day case procedure (just like giving birth :D).
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

Ye Gods, your poor dad!

Do you mind me asking why you wouldn't go to the GP with him?

He wouldn't come with me whatever I was going for. I'd not be any use so it would be pointless me going, he is quite capable.. why would you need to go? (a general you not a personal you)

Because I'm a nosey cow and so I knew he had actually gone and asked about it :D

(rather than him not go , or go and bottle it by telling me the waiting list was 44 years)

I had my laparoscopic sterilisation last Oct and it was a very quick straight forward procedure, in at 7.30am and home by 2.30pm. I had a few days of discomfort and nothing since (Well they made a mess of my stitches and I ended up taking them out myself :o)
The reasons that I got sterilised rather than my partner are- I did not want to put chemicals into my body any longer. I am 27 and my hubby is a lot older (18 yrs) than me. If for any reason we did not last or something happened, I do not want any more children ever with anybody. I want to take control of my own situation. Lastly, hubby is a wuss with needles :p

My DH had a Vasectomy completely without incident and was back at work within 24 hours.

Many of our friends have also had it, again without any issues.

My take on this was simple, I had had four children with all the trauma that entails and did not intend to put myself through a GA when he could have a local anaesthetic and a simple 10 min procedure at the surgery. Fortunately, he wouldn't have asked me to go down that route, he was adamant it was his turn to take the action, so he stepped up to the plate and we have never regretted it.

Interesting thread. My husband and I are actually both going to get ourselves "done" this year. We'd prefer both because there's a failure rate with both and we want to be absolutely sure. And he thinks its only fair that if I have it done, he should too.

I'm actually more worried about him! I think he has agreed to it without researching the possible side effects and I do want him to be fully informed of the risks himself.

We are trying to be MSE and I'm therefore trying to get mine done on the NHS, but since we are only turning 30 this year and have no children, it's a bit of an argument and in the end I might have to pay Marie Stopes. Yes, we are absolutely sure that we never want children - and also have agreed that we would adopt in the very very unlikely event of us both changing our minds. I have convinced my GP so far so the next step is referral to a specialist. On the other hand, the private vasectomy is not as expensive so I think we will just have that done at MS, rather than having the same argument with is (different) GP.
