I don't blame you not wanting the coil, it's an alien being in your body.

I was sterilised years ago and I'd say go for it. A bit of pain for a few days which you can sort out with co-codamol is worth it.

My brother had the snip about 5 years ago with no problems at all.

See this is why it's hard, as you have mentioned both being fine! :D

Shall I just ask my husband if he wants to toss for it? Heads, snip, tails, steri?

    Yikes! Pun not intended! :o:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

If he's happy enough to have it done, knowing what's involved and the possible risks, I suppose it's up to him. After all, Childbirth and female contraception aren't totally risk free either, so you've already done your share. A vascetomy is less risky than sterilisation and it's more effective.

My dad is one of the horror stories.

He had the snip about 20 years ago after my brother was born.. it took months to heal (bear in mind he is a man!) He couldn't wear underwear and can now only wear undies that keep it all from moving where they cut the tubes there was a build up of scar tissue which caused the sperm being made to back up and it rptured the tubes where they are attached to the testicle causing the sperm to be released into the scrotum rather than be reabsorbed which is what usually happens to it.

He has days where it is bearable and days when it is not..

The GP said he could have another op to remove the tubes entirely so the scar tissue would be gone, but it coud end up twice as bad as it is now! I don't think he was convinced esp as the doc told my dad they do one incision for the vasectomy and refused to be told they had done 2... until my dad lobbed his bits on the desk and said 'two incisions!' and both were infected lol.

My stepdad had bruising for a few weeks and almost died a month after when he had forgotten about it and jumped down off the back of a truck.. he thought his balls had hit the floor and he landed on them lol.. his has been fine.

And no.. I wouldn't go to the GP with him.

That's what he says to me and I guess you're right about the snip being less risky :)

Ye Gods, your poor dad!

Do you mind me asking why you wouldn't go to the GP with him?

  • Do you have a regular cycle? If so, have you thought of natural family planning?

My husband and I use this method, as did my mother before me for 30 years (her and my dad only wanted 2 children and used this method effectively and only had 2 children)

My husband asked our gp when he did the 'your just home with your baby' visit where they count fingers and toes (again!)

The GP said that generally they dont do snips until a year after the last child, as this is apparently the peak time for divorces, and my husband may want to remarry and have more kids (charming!)

So he left it a year and made himself an appointment, and it was planned a few weeks after that. I didnt go to the GP appointment, but did go with him for the snip, (thought he deserved to be driven there and back!)

I thought they may expect partners to go in with them (like dads being there at the birth and cutting the cord) but they didnt ask.....and neither did I!!

I do have a regular cycle, but the natural method wouldn't work for us :)

  • Fair enough, it is a bit of a faff taking my temperature every day, but thought I'd mention it if you hadn't already considered it!

I wouldn't mind going to the GP with him, or even being there when it's done but I don't know if that would be allowed?

    That's ok :)

I'd rather something permanent which means we are ok whenever the mood takes us, ooerr! :o
