I actually think that was a good idea - a regular customer who happened to not be buying on that occasion should be able to remember the code but someone just wanting the loo with no intention of buying would need to ask or go elsewhere.
Personally, if I need to use the loo (or the boy I look after does) I always ask and have never been refused. I think its rude to just walk in and not ask first.
The Waterstones in Glasgow does this (in store costa), I leave hubby in the queue and ask for the code for the loo..... cant wait until after the coffee.....Light Bulb Moment - 11th Nov 2004 - Debt Free Day - 25th Mar 2011 :j0 -
I also got caught short in Bluewater (a week after the incident above) and not being from the area didn't have time to find the public loos so unfortunately for Burger King, I had to nip into theirs without buying something in advance. If the loos hadn't been so disgusting I would happily have bought a drink on the way out but the state of the place was so vile I didn't want to think what the hygeine was like behind the counter.
If you got caught short at BK in Bluewater, then you could have looked for the signs and seen that the toilet was up the stairs/escalator/lift right next to BK!:D

I think toilets in shops / pubs / resturants are only for paying customers. I would always ask if one of my kids needed to go and there was no where else. (although my youngest is a little boy and when he was potty training i'd rather find a bush or tree if i could than go in somewhere)
I work in a fairly small shop, not the sort of pop in and pick something up type shop, and it drives me MAD when people - normally work men and van drivers, walk in straight passed me without making eye contact and go in to the toilet absolutely stink the place out then walk out without saying a word. Its suuuuch bad manners. and they never open the windows. i've had to open the shop doors many a time to air the place praying that no one comes in and thinks its me!!:o
if someone came in and asked nicely, i'd never say no.0 -

:D
If memory serves I had just comes out of another shop (possibly Boots), desperate for the loo. When you're pregnant you get to decide how long it will take you to find a loo before you pee yourself in public. Personally I saw the BK sign and made a dash for it but next time I'll be sure to look out for the signs on a busy Saturday afternoon so I can go up the escalators crossed legged to use the public loos:D

I suffer from colitis and so have had to make many a dash into various places. In most cases I wouldn't have time to argue or queue and ask otherwise I'd just do it there and then!
However I've never been stopped and in a number of cases ended up spending money. We had to make an emergency stop at a craft place in Wales once. I came out but immediately had to go back in. I went to leave again but was still feeling really ill so in the end the whole family came in and we ended up all ordering from the cafe (except for me, lol)
I'd say the main problem though is the closure of so many public toilets. I was in town last year doing my shopping in Iceland. Suddenly I had to go. The nearest loos were quite some way, and then only other ones at McD. So we asked in store if they had some I could use. At first they said no, due to insurance, but my face must have looked desperate so a quick word with the manager and I was allowed to use their toilets. However had the public toilets opposite not have been closed some months earlier there wouldn't have been a problem.0 -
it makes sense to me but also it can be harsh when you have a little one desperate for the looReplies to posts are always welcome, If I have made a mistake in the post, I am human, tell me nicely and it will be corrected. If your reply cannot be nice, has an underlying issue, or you believe that you are God, please post in another forum. Thank you0

BHS really stand by there "you must buy something policy" i was about 34 weeks pregnant and really needed to go, the nearest public toilets we're about 5 minutes normal person walk (i waddled as i was massive!) away so i popped in, and asked to use the toilet, they flat out refused and said i MUST buy something, i asked really really nicely, ended up in tears and had to cross my legs all the way to the public loo's!Emily Sophia arrived 11 days early on 26/8/10 at 16:43 weighing 6lbs6oz0

I am surprised that no one has mentioned the "Community Toilet Scheme" :j
"All the businesses involved in the scheme are happy to allow non-customers to use their toilet facilities during their normal opening hours. Participating businesses will display a sticker in the window, so wherever you see this sign it means you are welcome to use the toilet facilities without necessarily having to ask or make a purchase. " :money:

McDonalds have a "Ronald McDonald House" charity box in its resturants so you could "spend a penny" to spend a penny
I am a donor to the Ronald McDonald House charity - does anyone else donate to them ? (I have not received the magazine they claim to send to donors)Hi, we’ve had to remove your signature.
