Tyre life???

Hiya hope someone can advise...my partner had 2 new tyres on his Peugeot 306 on 1st November and the tracking done - he checked yesterday and the inside of the tyres are so worn you can see wires, outsides look fine - he has only done about 2000 miles, is this right? surely they should last llonger than that.
Thanks

it would indicate that either the tracking was incorrectly adjusted or there is a fair bit of suspension wear.
what were the old tyres like?
  • Previous tyres had same problem
  • Continental Sport Contact 3 lasted 1k miles. Just over 2 weeks old.

Last night hit a bloody pothole and side wall badly gashed. Oh well 100 quid down the drain.

15k out of them usually and thats on a high powered diesel. I was shocked at that as my last car was getting 30k out of fronts.

Irregular tyre wear is a sign of a problem that needs to be addressed - either suspension or tracking as someone else as said.

I'm very surprised the garage fitting the tyres didnt point that out?

Is the car lowered by any chance?
  • Hiya, no it's not lowered - they did the tracking when they put the new tyres on

The issue is more likely to be a geometry problem, Omegas had a similar issue with excessive inner edge wear.

It could also indicate wear in the suspension, more than likely lower wishbones.

A simple alignment check is a poor substitute for a full geometry check.

I had problems for 6 months with an Omega TD with inner edge tread wear, went to Elite in Rainham on the advice of the Vauxhall dealer who said that is where they get this sorted if they have a car traded in with the issue, bear in mind this was 12 years ago, they checked and adjusted the geometry and I never had a problem with inner tread wear ever again.

My Michelin's are down to about 3mm with 40k on them, it's mostly motorway miles though - that helps.

Yes, that is perfectly right for a car whose tracking is out. Get the tracking done and get a new set of tyres fitted - those are illegal.

So they had a tracking or suspension problem with the old ones as well. I'm surprised the garage fitting the new ones didn't ask if they wanted the tracking checking or was it the fact it was going to cost £30-£50 the reason why it wasn't done?
  • As previoulsy stated, the tracking was done when they put on the new tyres, also a wheel balance
