At work I talk to a few people who have had massive (millions) windfalls - some through hard work, some through inheritance, some through tragedy (one is a payout from an accident that killed the poor womans husband and 3 daughters for which a major company was found liable). You know what? They dont seem to be 17 million times happier than me and spend a lot of time on their money - managing it, giving it away sensibly, etc. And Im sure they feel the sting of hangers on and people only interested in them for their cash.

That said, I wouldnt say no to a check if I actually played the lotto! :) I'd buy myself a flat in Manhattan and a flat in London for say half a mil together, fill my parents retirement accounts and ensure I have enough for the elderly relations to be taken care of as well as possible when they get to that point. I'd grab my backpack, spend a year or two exploring the world on a budget as thats more fun!

For the rest I'd find some smaller causes in the developing world that would use it well - £17 million isnt that much for one of the big orgs but could make such a huge difference to small projects that are hard to reach with traditional aid. I wouldn't quit work though - to be honest I'd do the same job regardless of whether or not I needed the money. I'd just take way better holidays!

Its amazing the amount of people for whom it would buy the freedom to go back packing. Its also amazing the amount of people who would'nt have courage to go on their own. Most say, i could never do that, but it seems theres a fair few people here, who dream. I still have'nt been to New Zealand yet, and i've yet to finish backpacking round Australia. Happines is freedom, or freedom is happiness?

I'd leave my wife and look for someone more appreciative of me.
Give £250k to my brother and the same to my parents.

    £17 million's easy.

    £650k on a lovely house.
    £10k max to furnish it.

    £10k/year for hobbies.
    £12k/year for bills/miscellaneous incidental life items/food/cleaner.

Then sit and look around for worthy causes to give it out to.

I'd mostly be sitting on the sun terrace, looking out to sea though, for the first few months.

Don't actually want any "things", just security that comes from knowing the money's there.

A world cruise would be the first thing I would purchase to give me time to think. I would fly friends and family out to join me for two weeks at a time for the company.

I would like to set up some form of family trust so that it paid of the mortgages or first homes for my nearest and dearest but do it in the form of a loan so that the money goes back in to the trust fund to help future generations when the property is sold.

I would want to buy a couple of properties, here and somewhere warm, for holidays and then I would probably get a little silly with a few cars. I have always wanted something old enough for the London to Brighton run and something with big wheel arches that turn in to running boards. And then I would need a run around of some sort.

I would also like my own horse and to be able to help out with riding for the disabled.

I know that money can't buy happiness, but it can cause an inordinate amount of stress and worry when you don't have enough to live on so it would be nice to find a way to help those most in need. Would £17m even pay off all the debts on the DFW board???

Half of it to my immediate family. The other half in securities after making sure I have new wheels for the rest of my life. Keep the whole thing a secret from everyone on the planet and continue working my butt off.

Think your living in a different world to the one that exsists, suggest you look up the city property prices!

    I would pay off debts

    Buy a nice house

Make sure that my family and friends were looked after financially

Have a nice holiday and buy a nice car

Give to various charities and start up a charity trust to give harship grants to those who are disabled or suffering serious illness

I would defintely share the money - it could make a difference to so many people's lives

Can't get away from that London to Brighton run :rotfl:

We'll have to go, ( i've never been). I'm sure you're right in saying £17 million would'nt pay off all the debts on the DFW board.
