Aldi twin tuner 160gb twin tuner pvr £99

Dear God, they are still selling these huh?!
Let me give you the benefit of a year of experience in a nutshell:
Keep your receipt. take it home, use it for a couple of months, see if you like the idea of a PVR. The chances are you will love it. You don't have to watch utter crap any more, just things you like. The Aldi model will probably have several faults that you can live with, or drive you nuts. Hard drive recording software is notoriously complex and buggy; it depends on regular updates. At this price, you don't get quality or support. You get really mad when you have to wipe the hard disc (and lose all your recordings) or the last in the series doesn't record properly. Don't spend months on chat boards trying to figure out how to make it work well. Take it back for a refund. If you like it, you will happily decide to splash around £200 out on a box that reliably works every time, is supported, has a good online community. This basically means Humax or Topfield. I love my topfield now because you can use lots of third party software versions on it. But I like tinkering - changing software can be a little complex. I've set mine up so it gets full listings from Radio Times, including full film reviews, ratings etc. I can also search this TV guide for keywords, so I can get it to automatically record any programme with a specific actor appearing for example. Now that is clever.
So use this offer to try out the idea of the PVR; Aldi are excellent at taking things back.

I work for Aldi and if you didnt know we are the best paid shop assistants around and if your unlucky enough to have weary staff in your local then move.:THankMcSpank wrote:Let me guess...there'll only be four of these at each branch & 1hr before Aldi open there'll be a queue outside. Then a big scrum when the shop actually opens...some big bruiser from Albania will put 3 in his basket - the underpaid & weary staff won't get involved......& all I'll leave with is a packet of dodgy 'out of date' French biscuits that I'm even not sure what the flavour is (& I didn't even want, but felt the need to buy something instead of leaving empty handed).
Sound about right?0 -
Bought 2 of these on Sunday one for mum one for MiL
Tried MiL straight away BBC and some Sky channels great but ITV, 4 , 5 and others terrible - like slowly fast forwarding a DVD and the sound kept cutting out
The question is will mothers be just as bad?? Reading above posts it probably will!!

Sounds like a case of poor signal: you can't always expect an aerial previously used for analogue to work with digital. The digital signals may not be present or strong, may come from a different direction to the analogue ones, and may be at quite a different frequency from the analogue ones, for which the aerial was not designed. Had this aerial worked fine with another Freeview receiver?Time is an illusion - lunch time doubly so.0

Just took back 2 of the new Tevion boxes for refund(a total of 5 including the previous model). Both locked up when trying to fast forward a recording made with the second tuner. One had the 'white noise' sound problem or no sound at all when changing channels, the other, no picture or sound when returning from playing back a recording. Sad/annoying that despite several firmware updates they just can't get it right.
Pleased to say my Thomson just keeps working after 6 months and it is easier to use.0 -
Mines going back tomorrow, There is a software update for it due 8th December to take it to 1.8 and hopefully fix some of the many problems, but I've had enough of this unit - Tonight its totally frozen, and took 5 reboots to reset it.
Interestingly when I spoke to their helpline, the advice they offered was to return it for a refund or wait a week then call back as they have no info yet about it(The girl I spoke to said that they were getting 1000's of calls about this PVR, (and the TV aldi's sold last week)) - When I called into aldi's at lunchtime today their 'warehouse' door was open and at the front was a trolley with a few obvious customer returns and at least 8 PVR's, - I think that by the end of this month they will nearly all have been returned." Just wanted to note that I'm about to take my one of these back - it freezes, the recordings only work 50% of the time, the sound cuts out, it makes weird noises, it needs hard resetting too often.
Saw some alternatives in Currys.digital for about £130 (Matsui, Daewoo) so might give them a go.
Anyone know of a cheap dual tuner HDD & DVD recorder unit? I can find dual tuner HDD ones cheap, and DVD recorders cheap, just not the two together...0 -
Agreed, had a Technosonic and took it back and bought a Thomson, had it 9 months and not a single lock up or lost recording, didn't realise how useful the fact that it records the last hour of the 2 channels all the time would be either.mercurystar999 wrote:I have the thomson pvr.
