Use mine quite easily - card in, punch in PIN and passcode out. Also found that my NW card works on my Barclays card reader.

Thats right its standardised they all work with each others cards, and criminals are laughing with such a easy stupid system in place. The only thing is does it annoy the banks customers. Those who defend the banks who use it should remember that its the banks that are responsible for security, not its users - therefore they should not compromise userbility especially with a pointless system like this.
  • haven't been sent one ,so use normal log in

it is a pointless system still easy to fool by criminals (card readers are easily reverse engineered)
What point would reverse engineering the card reader do? If you want one you can get them very easily. However they are no use without your bank card and PIN, which are more difficult to acquire unless they happen to be intercepting your post at the exact time you request a replacement card + pin.

I find it far better than the stupid "We pick a random question out of 5, all of which our advisors can see by entering your sort code and account number", ala co-op. It also means I don't have to remember silly amounts of "secure" answers which never change.

Must say though, I like Googles idea of sending a 6 digit number to my mobile phone, but not everyone has a mobile...

That card reader milarky is a massive pain in the !!! and is one of the big reasons why I moved my current account away from Nationwide. I still have my flexaccount for a few bits of income, but no I don't use it to log on and hope they get rid of it. Even if they still paid decent interest on the flexaccount the card reader would still have made me leave. You have to use it to pay anyone or do most things online. I've had this out with Nationwide on the phone.... it is a pointless system still easy to fool by criminals (card readers are easily reverse engineered) but makes customers lives difficult. My elderly mother is always getting confused by it.

If they really need more security they should use the call back thing that Lloyds Banking group use.

Not at all. Why on earth do you think banks would spend millions upon millions of pounds implementing this system if it makes no difference. It clearly does.

I do agree it's annoying - but while it's only needed for payments I don't mind so much.

That says it all! A bit like most of society saying, what ever happens it's someone else's fault

Only certain banks have used this system. Criminals can get hold of card readers. They can clone cards and extract PIN information. Card readers DO NOT make things any more secure.

You've missed the point entirely and quote an example that has nothing to do with the topic.

Surely to clone your card they need your physical card, and if you let your card out of your sight long enough for someone to clone it, your an idiot.

Its like using using a 200 character multicase password on your home PC to prevent hackers getting in and leaving your front door open, or installing the first version of WinXP on a PC directly connected to the internet and applying no service packs.

Card readers are not perfect, but they are 100% better than login details that hardly ever change.
  • I suspect they will drop the Memorable option at some time in the future.
