I did a family night in box for my eldest son's birthday using a free toy box from huggies nappies. It was for 6 of them to share so it had 6 x 6 packs of coke 2 huge boxes of popcorn about a pound each in home bargains 4 x multipacks of crisps loads of dvd's picked up on offer at hmv during the year, bags of lollies , jelly type sweets, bars of chocolate, bags of sweets picked up on bogof etc. He was thrilled and so were the rest of them and he's 27. lol

Don't know about anyone else but we get through quite a few boxes of nappies so i thought of adapting those to use as hampers as they are strong cardboard

  • Hi all

I am thinking of branching out and sell baskets at a fair or two between now and christmas

I was thinking i would do about 10 different types of hampers and make several of each to sell there and then and hand out business cards for future orders or to people who want a made to measure option

also want to do some really small(mug) ones too for pocket money prices

    What do you think ??

what 10 hampers do you think i should concentrate on i guess booze is not allowed due to licensing

    so far i thought

    italian
    indian
    relaxing/smellies
    coffee
    gardening
    car wash
    retro sweets
    movie night
    tea and biscuits
    cocktails

    and possibly a nappy cake

All ideas welcomed especially around pricing

Matalan have some boxes that would be great for kids hampers, they come in bright colours. Blue, Green, Pink and Orange (I think) They're storage boxes with handles on either side, and a chalk board on the front, which you could write 'Happy Birthday!' or whatever on. I got 2 for my parents birthdays, they're quite deep but when padded out with paper look great!

    are these them??

  • I am going to have a go at making a huge popcorn/fries box for my 'family night in' basket. I figure that if I make the sides & bottom from a box, use masking tape to affix then papier mache over the lot, I will have a very strong box. I was thinking painting it using normal emulsion, then decorating with either coloured paper or markers - not sure yet. But I am also thinking that this would be a very vereeeeeeeee cheap way of making baskets. The possibilities are endless.

For some christmas hampers this year, I used normal boxes but covered them in fablon (cheap in wilko/ebay) it's that sticky backed stuff. I cut the boxes like the side of a sleigh before I put the fablon on, and put runners on the side and cellophane and all that. It worked really well and I wish I had saved a pic for you all.

    What a great idea

Shaz, what a great idea! I bet they would be snapped up as would be a complete present. And doing a few of each you can buy big sized packs of things and split. I love all your 'themes'. What about Chinese or Chocolate/Hor Chocolate? These are 2 of what I'm doing for my Xmas baskets. I'm going to go to a local chinese supermarket for most of the chinese bits as I guessed it would be cheaper than Tesco/Asda etc.

How about making bath salts for relaxing hamper. Very easy to make and fab to use.

Are you thinking you'd price all the same or price according to how much the contents have cost you? I think I'd do the latter.

    Good luck!

I love these, may be suitable for my son's movie night hamper. Wasn't sure how I'd package the bits, think I know now :D

Having been self employed before and realise you never charge enough for your time i am determined to be realistic about the cost of my time i was kind of thinking double the cost of the materials and contents but not sure that waould make it too expensive to the customer

Either that or a fixed amount on top for labour for each basket i think i better do some research

For anyone who is thinking of doing baskets for sale like Shaz, here's an idea for you. Had to go into my local crafter's shop recently (she also supplies school uniforms) and she was selling baskets of homemade jam. She had three sizes available, all in small jars with colour coordinated lid covers and pretty (colour co-ordinated) printed labels. They ranged in price from €14 for the 4 jar basket to €28 for the 7 (larger) jars basket. Wasn't cheeky enough to take a photo, sorry, but would be really easy for someone who is handy in the kitchen to do, and I bet they would sell really easily, I was seriously tempted, even though they were expensive!! HTH,
    Credit card €7892.36/€ 0
    Catalogues €767.52/€ 0
    hospital costs €550
    wtshtf fund 0/ €2000
