Have you seen a Honda Legend?
The only ones I have seen for sale in London have had the engine management light on.
Isn't Reliabity Index the one that was shown to be rather inaccurate?
In the JD Power survey Honda came near the bottom and was well below average in 2010.
Since JD Power has a been proved to be more accurate I will stick with them, Reliability Index seem to be the new kids on the block in comparison.
The JD Power dependability results are here http://businesscenter.jdpower.com/news/pressrelease.aspx?ID=2010034
I have seen a Honda Legend and I've driven plenty of them thanks, but then I had 20 years at the company, so I should know.
"Isn't Reliabity Index the one that was shown to be rather inaccurate?"
Nope. But if you want to nit pick, here is the UK JD Power survery (unlike the American link you provided).

Guess which company has more cars in the top ten than any other?
Hint, Honda0 -
Just because he isn't interested in mpg doens't mean he wants to spend £60 driving to the shops and back and several hundred to roadtax it.
Not the twilight zone, but if you think it is wrong to give sensible advice then I am unsure how to respond.
Considering mpg isn't the only reason to discount a 750iL, they cost a fortune to service, tax and insure, that was my point, and when most people say they don't consider fuel consumption an issue means they don't want a rattly manual diesel with cloth seats, not that running costs are irrelevant, just not a priority, they still need to be considered.
An S Type diesel will be relatively cheap to run, and hold its value well due to this fact. Though the OP could also consider a 3.0 petrol S Type as he will get a newer and better specced Jag for the same money. Though would I advise buying the top spec V8 or R model, no, I wouldn't, the servicing cost will cripple even on a small annual mileage.
This is the kind of thing I believe the OP meant when he said mpg wasn't an issue, not looking to buy a teutonic hyper limo!
Just because mpg isn't an issue doesn't mean it should be discounted completely, the OP is retired and consideration must always be given to overall running costs when on a fixed income.
Fair enough you read and interpreted the post differently to me. Only the OP knows what he wants, however stating "fuel costs are not an issue" does give a starting point in post 1 its fair to say
Recommending a diesel IMO is not what was wanted in this cirumstance I do genuinely believe. I am sure we are all believing we are giving good advice with best intentions
OP probably has more than sufficient vehicles to consider now however
A useful site if OP isn't looking at is Parkers which has reviews and facts and figures on all models
For instance you can see the road tax bandings for all models in the 7 series range here for example
Also sourcing a good local independent specialist for whatever vehicle is important to keep servicing costs down (altough again none of these cars are going to be in more than once a year at very most I would have thought)0 -

Good luck, and don't forget to come back and let us all know what you buy.
Cheers.:beer:0 -
Get a diesel S Type Jaaaaaag, you know you want to.
From mid £7000 mark at CarGiant, a 57 plate for around £9000 to £12000 depending on spec and mileage, you know you want tom they can do the Nurburgring in under 10 minutes even with Clarkson at the wheel, they also have the Jaaaaaaaaaaag waft factor.
No German car can touch the Jaaaaaag for waft factor.
For starters you don't buy a car from Cargiant, and secondly Bmw is in a different class to to Jag.0 -

A transit van can go round the Nurgurgring in 10 minutes, so not sure thats such a big statement.

Yes you are right a BMW is in a different class, a lower one.
A BMW is not a classy car to drive. Reliable, perhaps, though they do have their problems, more recently than in years gone by, especially the diesels, but they are mainly small problems, ad the diesels will do higher miles.
Why, exactly shouldn't I buy a car from CarGiant, have bought loads over the years, my first one being back in 1991, when they where still called The Great Trade Centre.
The last one was a Renault Clio DCi, 56 plate, £5600 or thereabouts, can't remember as it was Nov 09 and it is the wifes car. A main dealer one exactly the same was the best part of £8000 at the time, with more miles, the wifes had 28k on it so a bit less than the average.
Not had a problem with it, now on nearly 60k.
Next time you are in London check out the Private Hire vehicles, more than a few are bought at CarGiant, why? because there is a huge selection of ex fleet fodder, all ready to be flogged to death doing 60k a year for the nect 3 years, the sold off on eBay and another one bought from CG.
One of my mates that still does chauffeur work had 4 cars on the trot from CG, then he bought his brand new S320CDi, around £50k that cost almost 7 years ago, CG has 3 yr olds for half that.
Yeah, you are right, better not to buy from them.0 -

Yes, but only with the "queen of the ring" driving, didn't she get round in 9 minutes 12 seconds in the Jaaaaaag.
My own personal choice for a big exec cruiser would be an XF diesel, 2.7 or the new 3.0 either would do, they are coming onto the market on a 58 plate for £17.5k, ex fleet, a bit up on miles, but hey, who cares, the gearknob rises out the centre console when you start it up. Thats it, SOLD.0 -

I had a Metro where the gearknob descended into the centre console (ok, floor) when I was driving it.
I can't say I was that impressed.0 -
Yes, but it is always better when it happens through desgin rather than mechanical failure.
Lets not forget that the XF is WhatCar exec car of the year for the fourth year running, at least I think it is What Car.0
