Why else does a plc exist?

What do former Enron, Worldcom, PollyPeck, BCCI.... and, HBOS of course, shareholders think of that question?

They think that the people running their company messed up big time.

It doesn't change the fact that they existed to make money for their shareholders. They just failed in their objectives.

Similar storyline. Am regularly abroad and applied for Clarity card on-line only to be declined (no past credit issues, didn't bother with Experian). Profitability, profitablity, profitablity am guessing. Any recommendations for similar "low-fee abroad" credit cards where I dont have to be an existing cutomer?

For purchases, the Post Office card - apply via topcashback for £35 cashback.
  • Halifax keep old outdated information on their computer because when my dad went in to pick up his loan I noticed all my family were listed as living at his house even though we had all moved out well over twenty years ago.

I told my dad and he informed the lady that he was the only person living there and she needs to update her records.

She updated the computer straight away and removed us all apart from my mom and he said remove her as well because she died in 1990.

So it proves they do keep old outdated data.

They need to be told things have changed in order to update their records.

Not sure why details of other family members were being shown to Dad either, unless there were joint accounts / trustee accounts. It's none of his business and he doesn't have the authority to change the addresses of other customers - family or not.

Sounds like a DPA breach to me.
  • She typed in his name and address because he was picking up a loan from them and we could both see the screen in front of us and that's when I noticed my name as well as the rest of the family living there.

So I told my dad and he said that we were not living there anymore and we don't have any joint accounts trustee accounts.

I just mentioned to my dad the data is outdated and he told the woman that its outdated and she removed us all from his address because he owns the house.

He's had trouble in the past from my cousin who has the same first name as my dad and even though it got sorted I don't trust him and that's why I wanted them to update their records.

  • Halifax behaved oddly in my case by not accepting my Clarity application online and instead sending me a paper version of the application form in the post (completed with the details provided online) which they wanted me to sign in ink and send back.

I duly sent it back and they then issued a Clarity card with a fairly low credit limit and the minimum interest rate but in order to activate it I couldn't use their automated telephone activation and was put through to an operator who demanded to check various things about me again including my current employment status.

I'm currently "retired" below the usual age for retiring in as much as I'm not working, not seeking employment and not claiming benefits. But anyhow this certainly seems to show that their application process is not consistent and that not all applications are accepted online. Of course perhaps they have had a recent problem with credit card ID fraud at another address at my postcode or something and hence why they wanted to send out the paper application form and get it back before allowing my application.

I now have to take a decision about whether or not to still retain my Nationwide Visa credit card for European use or switch entirely to the Halifax Clarity for card use abroad. One of the main concerns these days is always that a card that is not used a couple of times a year often ends up suddenly being cancelled by its issuer without prior warning. As the Nationwide card has double the credit limit of the Halifax card on the whole I'm inclined to keep it.
  • P.S. Also in my favour may be that I hold a Bank of Scotland credit card that used to be a BAA Worldcard and more recently applied for and was accepted for a Halifax Easycash account in order to have a Visa Electron card.

As my credit rating is extremely good but my current income now fairly poor this seems to suggest that Halifax are actually keener to issue the card to customers who may end up needing to borrow on it rather than just using it entirely fee free as someone with a high income would tend to do.
