Halifax Clarity application refused

Also got an application for a Halifax clarity card declined last week. So went to experian to get a statutory credit report and all appears to be fine: no debt, 2 existing credit cards paid off in full each month, etc.

I guess they realised that they wouldn't be able to make any money...

I thought I'd add in that I was also instantly refused for a Halifax Clarity credit card despite a perfect credit history. I was worried so immediately ordered a statutory report from Experian, which did show the two credit searches by Halifax. Why two? Anyway there was nothing unexpected on there. I only have one other CC which is used regularly (for cashback) and cleared each month in full. No loans, overdrafts or arrears. The only possible explanation is that they are turning away people who have a history of repaying in full each month.

Now I know they are businesses and want to make money from customers, but it's a bit frustrating to have a search on my credit just for them to turn me away for not getting into debt!

Halifax's internal scoring system tends to favour applicants who have other accounts with them. I previously only had one credit card which was always paid off in full each month, but I have a current account and ISA with them (not my main account), and was accepted for a clarity card with £3350 limit, with no marks on my experian credit report
Debt free and staying that way!

It's a remarkable leap of faith that it's the only possible explanation, when the application asks numerous questions that are considered before coming to the offer / decline decision - which also takes in to account your Halifax customer relationship.

I pay in full every month, and had no problems getting a 12.9% clarity card.

Of course, this was based purely on my existing relationship with Halifax, and this was stated during the phone process. The actual phrase used was 'Due to your internal score with us being XXX we can offer you the Clarity at 12.9%'
    It's a health benefit ...

    Hi
I am also interested in the Clarity Card and would be interested in what credit limits other people have received with an approved application, understand limits are mainly be based on individuals but a average idea would be a help
I currently have two other c/cards with the Halifax and an ISA , plus a reward account, and a current account.
    All help/advice appreciated

    Hi folks,

I have a clarity card, as does my DH.

We took them out as we are going on a big holiday in November and also there was a 2% cash back deal on transfers, with no fees.

What I didn't expect, was £28 of interest to be added to my first bill, my husbands's too! There is no interest free period for transfers unlike purchases. I have also had a bill for 1p this month. It seems interest is very interesting for Halifax. I am not impressed to be honest. I am cancelling it as we speak. Oh both our limits are 4.5k.

I don't personally recommend this card. My own bank (Santander) advised me to take out theirs which was also a no fee abroad one, and to load it with cash just before going.

    SFG x
  • Similar storyline. Am regularly abroad and applied for Clarity card on-line only to be declined (no past credit issues, didn't bother with Experian). Profitability, profitablity, profitablity am guessing. Any recommendations for similar "low-fee abroad" credit cards where I dont have to be an existing cutomer?

I have a default and got accepted by them because I have my current account, joint account and some savings with them. I have a Barclaycard Initial which I keep in good order. However Halifax only gave me £500, but I'm still pleased to have a decent credit card for when I go on holiday.
