    I also applied for a Clarity card, principally for the cheap European ATM withdrawals.

    Salary over £45k, mortgage paid, no debt, no credit card balance (but over £1k/month spent), at current address over 11 years, no record of any kind, Halifax account (albeit with little money - used for electron card, now about as much use as a chocolate fireguard).

    Application refused - the first in 20 years - and no explanation. :mad:

    100% certain it's because they don't thnk they'll make any money out of me (although, of course, they would get their cut from the vendor)

    Can't be bothered to speak to them, just called up and closed my account. :p
    i have similar circs with a "perfect" credit and I was refused too this week.
    According to Experian:
    "Shops and lenders should give clear explanations about why they refuse credit and they should tell you if their decision was based on:
    - information on your credit report;
    - other information you gave them;
    - other information they hold on you as a customer;
    - or their policies on providing credit."

    So, seeing as Halifax's only explanation was "We ..have our own unique scoring system, which is used to assess details contained within each customer's application. If one or more of these details do not meet our standard criteria, the application is declined." it doesn't seem that this fulfils Experian's expectations of lenders.

    Likewise, can I be bothered to complain? I only wanted it for the forex cash withdrawals
  • My husband has been refused a Clarity Card today - the first refusal in over 30 years.

    We have a current account and two ISA's each with Halifax with healthy balances. He also has a Halifax One credit card which he wanted to change to Clarity for use abroad.

    We own our house outright and have no debt whatsoever as we pay our credit cards in full every month.

    The only reasons we can think of are that they would not make any money out of us and my husband recently refused a financial review with them as we prefer to use an independent advisor.

    It might be because he has a One card that get got refused. When I got my Clarity I also had a One card. I called Halifax and asked if they could change it to a clarity and they said no, i need to cancel my One and wait 30 days then apply for the clarity. I was also told i was not allowed to have both cards.

    They also said if go into a branch they might allow me to have both but I tried this and they said no.

    He would have to close the One card and wait 30+ days before applying for the Clarity Rewards as you can't hold both.

    That is if you are willing to risk the app being declined again, of course.

    Part of me wonders if they would sooner lend to people that they are more likely to make money out of.

    Well they are a business :p

    Well, Halifax never never make much off us, we always pay CCs in full every month, have no mortgage or overdraft, yet we got a Clarity Reward Card each, and I only have a VERY small pension income!

    We do have several accounts with Halifax, perhaps that helps.
  • I applied for this card as MSE advised was best to take abroad. Typical APR quoted as 12.9%.
    When I received agreement to sign it read 21.9%. I queried this and was told it went on my credit rating - which is very good!!
    As I intend to settle each month, the rate does not really matter but I was annoyed by the arrogance of the person I spoke to who implied that there must be something dodgy about my personal circs for them to offer me that rate.
    I wrote and appealed, enclosing a copy of my credit statement asking for a reconsideration.
    In the meantime I have received 2 more letters urgin me to complete original offer letter.
    I phoned yesterday to ask for an update and was told appeal will take 30days +. Person also said she had never known an appeal be successful as they have already decided which rate to offer!

    I had to check my statement to see what interest rate I had (which is 12.9). Like you I have no intention of using it which is why I didn't even know what it was. Not sure why you care about it.

    I have no idea what my credit 'rating' with them is apart from expecting it to be OK, good enough for a 6k card limit and 5k overdraft. That said my overdraft limit was 2k (until I asked and immediately got it increased to 5k) and they bounced a DD which would have taken me 2k4 overdrawn for a few hours. They couldn't tell me why they would not accept an informal overdraft increase request of £400 while instantly accepting a formal increase request of 3k two days later. They basically said the computer said no and no one knows why the computer says what it says. The computer is obviously dumb and I and I think they might have taken it further except they said all their computer systems would be changing anyway in a few months due to the integration with Lloyds.
