No one would expect a dog or a cat to poo or wee to order or to a timetable yet human beings are expected too!!!

You most certainly do expect a dog to poo and wee to a timetable...the timetable being when you take them for a walk.

OP - if you don't like the job, then just go all out to find another. DON'T take the suggestion to go off sick; if you've been there for a grand total of 4 weeks and then you go off sick for 2 weeks with 'stress' it's really not going to look very good to prospective employers.

I'd say that Doctor's surgeries are notoriously busy places (did medical temping in my youth) and many GPs can be extremely chippy. Then you've got the patients with all their disgusting germs blowing around the place wanting emergency appointments for ingrown toenails. All this is probably why the experienced GP receptionists are often battleaxes.

The plus side is that you'll find it much easier to find a job whilst in a job.

I work in an optical practice. I clock in at 9.45 each morning for a 10 start. I then boil the kettle, see who else wants a coffee, talk about the weather/football/impending babies (3 pregnant women at my practice)/fashion, I dish out the coffee, someone else turns on the computers, we all settle at our desks/in our rooms and the shutters go up at 10. I only get paid from 10 though.

I'm supposed to finish at 6, if I have paperwork from earlier that I never did and needs to be sorted before I leave then that's my problem for not managing my time properly so I don't get paid after 6. If I'm with an unexpected patient then I get paid until I clock out because I can't have forseen the patient coming in.

It's fairly standard in healthcare to do this.

Oh and I can only pee on my break at about 2ish. The pregnant people go when they need though they need to get someone else to cover the front store.

Not that big a possibility of someone being that stupid!;)

Thanks for all the replies, I have worked in busy places before, but when we got told there isn't time to talk there's work to do, I had only asked one of the others if she was local to the job or had to get a bus (which I do), and that was before the start time.

A colleague who I bumped into out on the street, so we chatted and exchanged numbers, had to go to her drs and pay for a certificate as she was not believed when she had upset stomach and was worried in case she was either sick or had to rush to the loo while on reception and didn't want to pass germs on to patients.

Yes of course I am looking for another job and at the moment I am on the verge of just walking out before getting something else.

I have done nothing (this week) but think about or talk about this crappy situation, some ‘holiday’ this turned out to be!

I certainly do not want to stay in this environment, it’s petty, sniping and just not nice to work in and is affecting my mood around my friends and family, who don’t like how I am at the moment where all I go on about is this horrible place.

It is sensible to find another job first. If you just walk out you will not be entitled to Benefits.

  • I have just been to the job centre to claim I was not getting paid for this week, well how can I when I have only worked for 4 weeks, while there I mentioned the awful situation and he said someone would look into the case if I chose to resign, but signed me on to JSA and said if I did work next week to inform them and sign back off of JSA.

Meanwhile 3 agencies and a bucket load of applications has got to get me somewhere, I am plucking up the courage to speak to them and resign, think I'll say I have another position paying more which requires me to start on Monday.

I have been paid, have not signed a contract, so what is my obligation to them?

Good luck Jenny in whatever you decide to do. I hope everything turns out good for you in the end.

But GlasweJen - but are you paid 7p per hour more than the minimum wage? Tea-making and gossiping time excluded, it doesn't matter what is or isn't standard in an industry. People expected to stay behind, whether it's because of the weight of work there is or because of the speed at which they do it, still qualify for NMW.

The OP is being paid £6 per hour. If she's regularly staying behind for no extra pay and it takes her below £5.93 per hour, then this is ILLEGAL.

ETA: OP - if this is the case, if your staying behind unpaid pushes you to below NMW, and if you are worried about being sanctioned if you leave, I would speak to your advisor at the Jobcentre. I don't know how they would approach employers paying less than NMW, but I really can't believe they'd sanction you for leaving a job because the pay was illegal. Of course, before that, you'd need to speak to someone senior where you work to see if they will amend your pay.

Just been in my fathers surgery to collect prescription for him and they were really nice, friendly, had time to chat to people.

I managed to get hold of the assistant Practice Manager and told her over the phone I wish to resign and she did her nut, did not take well to my reasons, she said I suppose you treat all employers the same. When I mentioned how she critises in front of others which I thought was out of order she said it's because you need to do the job properly and how she has bent over backwards to train me and now I am letting her down. Then said I did something wrong on the last day I worked there.

Reckons I owe her money that she has paid me leave (well that means I got less than I thought), so need to work Monday as I have not given enough notice, funny how she does not answer her phone when I tried to get hold of her, then she had the cheek to say how I should have made an appointment with her this week (when I am the one she placed on leave), yes lovely atmostphere, I am so looking forward to Monday!
