    Hi everyone,
Unless u have lots to shred....why buy a shredder? I save money and time ....I flush all my cc slips down the loo...no chance of someone using them after that ;D

    good advice.

tear up the bits that contain addresses, cc numbers, account numbers and any kind of identifying info including purchase history.

the loo is a great and cheap way to ditch unwanted paper.
:o Keep trying.........................what else is there to do? :o

Well here is my first post and lets hope it's a good one!

B&Q have their own brand shredder which I just picked up for £10.98. It is a Cross Cut shredder and does 5 sheets and also cuts credit cards (which I think I need to do after this years shopping sprees!).

BTW - Not many left in Leicester...

we are taking a challenge (£9.99) strip cut shredder back to argos today, we used it tis morning for 2 minutes, single sheets only. and it cut out; we then found a little sticker on the back saying " 2 min max operation time" - or words to that effect!
(we tend to have a shredding fest once every few months rather than shredding-as-u-go which is probably much better)

we have already taken 2 cross-cut shredders back, one to argos, one to WHSmiths because both jammed within minutes of starting to use them, on well under the stated max number of sheets.

we'd had an old strip cut one for years, and it was fine until hubby accidentally dropped a paperclip in and it jammed beyond all redemption,
which was why we went back to strip cut,

so I guess the advice above about paying £60+ is re-inforced by this, but first we will try the £19.99 version in argos!!

at this rate we will just get a new shredder every time we do shredding - happy days, never mind, our kettle packed up thsi morning, so off to argos anyway!!

Thanks for all the useful advice here, as always very informative!!

I've just got in from argos with the £19.99 model [½ normal price]. Seems good value for one that shreds CDs, a prerequisite since finding a splinter from one I just snapped in half - in my foot!

The instructions say it has a overheating protection, so hopefully if it cuts out a reset/cooldown should suffice.
Energy prices are rising fast so if you like my comment, thank me quickly so you can shut down your computer sooner..! And if you believe Al gore you'll be doing your bit for the planet
  • We bought a Texet from Sainsbury's - was half price (£12.50 from £25) and it was a brand we recognised.

It was used well but started to slow down enormously after around 1,000 pages. Was still good as a bargain shredder.

I now use the one at work which is a behemoth :)

Will you not end up blocking the loo???
Then have to fork out to get the plumber out.
I live in a area where we are given blue bins for paper and plastic recycle able.
So shredding my paper deteils and recycling makes me feel like am doin my part for da enviroment.

Any good deals on cross cut shredder. Had our shredder for about a year, says can cut 5 pages at the same time. NOT, its more like one at a time. Gets bits of paper stuck at one end. It was from Staples own brand.

I have just bought a great shredder from Argos (Challenge) and it was reduced from £24.99 to £19.99. I can't remember the ref number but if cuts the paper to confetti.
  • I bought Tesco value brand cross cut shredder for £19.99...RUBBISH! Only shredded about 3 sheets of paper then stopped working altogether
