As a slight drift - If you are on a flight that is not full and you are in the fortunate position of having empty seats next to you which will allow a lie down in some cases - to stop other passengers grabbing those seats after take off, just grab the 'barf bag' and place it near your mouth with your head slightly lowered in an 'about to puke' position.

It will make others 'less keen' to take those seats next to you if they believe there is a risk of coming into contact with regurgitated stomach contents.

I was told or read this years ago - where or by whom I just can't remember. What I can remember though is that it works - very effectively as well! thumbs.gif

Picking one's nose and inserting the other finger in mouth also helps.

    I like that idea :)

I just tend to smile and nod at passengers as the board and that tends to get me a row all to myself :)

I would rather sit near a child than some fat, miserable, rude, sweaty adult.

I have to agree - I had a heffer sat next to me on the way to Malta. He didn't seem to comprehend that I did not want a third of his body mass in my seat, so I used a pashmina to put a makeshift screen between us! ;)
    Gone ... or have I?

My heart used to sink when I used to scan the departure lounge and spot a number of kids, then I discovered £300 worth of bose noise cancelling earphones, combine those with a large glass of red wine and a valium tab and flights are a joy.

Were the wine and Valium for you or the children? :)

I flew back from Spain the other day and there were several babies on board who all seemed to be in competition with each other to make the most noise. I eventually knocked myself out with G&T but sometimes I think it would be easier to get the kids drunk.

I don't understand the problem. My view is that my children generally cant get off the plane (no matter how hard they pull that big handle), making them secure environments.

Therefore, my long haul flights are an opportunity to catch up with my sleep knowing that the kids are safe. The air hostesses generally seem happy to play with them, and bring them back when they crawl into First?

Get your head down Moonchild - incoming flak.

I was once on a flight when an unattended little b***er seemed to be having great fun running up and down the aisles with glee.

Not content with annoying everyone at being a nuisance, this brat took great delight in stamping his feet at the same time.

After about half an hour - a strategically placed outstretched leg and foot in the aforementioned aisle managed to 'supress' the enthusiasm of the child.

There was a short period of high pitched squealing after the 'event', however, this was well worth it for a more prolonged period of silence thereafter.

And another thing - why do people always decide to go to the toilet as soon as the food service starts which results in cabin crew having to reverse their carts to the nearest bulkhead to allow a pax to get past?

And the same happens when that person has finished their 'business'.

The food service usually starts around the time the "fasten seatbelts" sign is switched off after take-off. Since in many situations you can be stuck in your seat for quite a long time after boarding (e.g. the plane is late and has to wait by the runway for a new take-off slot), several people are probably bursting by that time. You might also have spent quite a while waiting to board the plane after passing through the gate - so unless you go as soon as you board (which is a pain as the aisle is full of people boarding), you have to wait.

Not all kids are badly behaved on planes. My two have travelled on some very long haul routes and are entertained just by the fact that they are up in the air. We often get compliments on how well behaved they are, which is lovely after seeing the look of horror on peoples faces when we originally boarded with them.

As a mother I would be really embarrassed if my kids were to cause any sort of disturbance to other passengers. Flights cost a lot of money and all passengers deserve to journey in peace. Sadly the survey reflects the general opinion in society of children; that most of them are little brats with selfish or incapable parents who can't control them.

Even more sadly, in the majority of cases, that is the reality.

Well done you for bringing your children up properly, you are in a minority.
