    Yay to the OP!

I didn't realise allotments got bought and sold! Sorry its a loss, but "kondo" is a concept whose time has come - it certainly doesn't sound like it gave you joy :)

Yes, I must admit that I thought allotments were rented, rather than owned.

But well done for selling it, hopefully it'll give someone else some joy

You just reminded me, I noticed some allotments up the road from my new house. Why are you giving yours up? Is it just too much work to maintain? I've not been much of a gardener but my current place is all paved. I had pondered once in a while about getting some chickens, which I notice on my council website you can keep on their allotments.

Maybe I should start with pots in my garden for a couple of years first, to see if I can keep them alive first. It looks like a half plot is only £16 a year here though so sounds reasonable. I guess though it depends where my new job is as if it is too far chickens might not work as I might not be able to get there in winter months after dawn and before dusk to look after them properly.

it's different with our allotments as they are privately owned. When you 'purchase' one - you purchase the contents and not the land itself (so plants, sheds, greenhouses, fences etc...). You get a share certificate for which you pay £20 'rent' a year in addition to whatever you pay to the person you are 'buying' from. It's all very figurative.

I don't know about Council allotments as I have had no experience with them.

Hi pathtofreedom!! I am giving mine up because of the horsetail problem on my particular plot - it makes it very difficult to keep on top of it (especially if you are working full time and you don't have hours and hours to dedicate to it). There were 3 of us doing the allotment and we were doing about 6 hours a week between us (sometimes a bit more or less) - but in the end it was a case that everytime you go to plant something you had to deal with horsetail and it's not easy stuff to get out! you can't kill it either - it's very persistent. So we weren't getting much value in terms of crops v effort. I am having a veg plot in my new garden though...so I am carrying on growing veggies - hopefully more successfully.

I really hope it does give someone else some pleasure - I used to like going up there (especially in the evening as it was so quiet) and having some time to myself - but it's just too much with the new house.

    There - I've justified it!

    Great stuff! :T
a penny picker upper. MFW approx 78% to go | FIRE 3 years worth (30% savings rate: now aiming for 40%!) | Normality is a paved road; it's comfortable to walk, but no flowers grow on it | Whatever you're meant to do, do it now. The conditions are always impossible | The only thing you absolutely have to know, is the location of the library

    Happy Friday everyone.

Lady came round to sort allotment stuff out last night.

Got £50, plus my share money of £18. So, had a takeaway with the £18 (Well £15 of it - it was late when we came in from the garden and DH couldn't wait for me to cook!) and my half of the £50 will be going towards the kitchen fund.

In other money news...I have sold my old cooker that was at the old house and has been at my MILs for the last few months. A son of a colleague of hers is moving into a flat - so they offered £50 and to be fair that's fine - another sale and another £50 to be added to the kitchen fund once it is in my hand!

OP is showing on our account - excited!! :T signature updated!

So glad to be back on the road to being MF. It will be a relatively slow start as we have lots to pay out on the new house. Really glad we got the first OP done before we had been at the new place for 12 months.

Will be chopping leaflets tonight in readiness for my mammoth leaflet delivering session tomorrow for our event next week.

We had a bargain £20 for 540 plug plants for the Plant Stall - should keep us going throughout June - nice money to be made on those for the charity - works out 4p per plant! Lots of potting planned for Sunday!

Massage last night (she's dropped the price to £20!) and yoga tonight - so should be raring to go over the weekend.

    Wishing everyone a fantastic weekend.
