I don't think the problem is social housing and benefits being available. The problem is the abuse of the system for people who don't actualy need that help.

WE have been on council house for 4 years....

But silly us... we got a job and got married before we decided we should have children... now we are in a privately rented 2 bed house witht he 5 of us...

Overheard woman in Tesco earlier saying how she went out and 'got' pregnant so she could jack her job in - council just given her a brand new 2 bed house all bills paid.....

    I am fumming :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

Takes me back as to when we first applied and the chap there told us we have no chance.... even suguested that if i were on my own with the kids we may have better luck !!!

Still her baby deffetley fell from the ugly tree.. obviously it dark in the 'club'

I think thats an awful way to describe a child! What on earth have they done to be described in this way! Its not their fault. As much as I think you are right in some respects (I have 3 children and having to rent privately to escape domestic violence due to waiting lists), I still think you need to curb your opinions when they are aimed at children.

Isn't it 7 for oposite sex and 10 for same sex or something like that. I know a family of 8 in a 3 bed.

It varies from council to council depending on demand/property availability. Some areas have a glut of 3 bed houses, but a shortage of 2 beds so will allow a family with just 1 child to apply for a 3 bed. In other areas, the best you could hope for would be a 1 bed flat. Horses for courses. As a general rule of thumb, if you want a bigger proprty you would be better off heading away from the South East rather than having more children.

So in summary, the OP is living in a house too small, because she CHOSE to have more kids than the house it suitable for, and now wants the council to provide better housing for her family. And she has issue with people who expect the council to provide better housing for their families......Am I missing something here?

So why should taxpayers have to subsidise this single mum to have children that she cannot support?
I doubt WWH will agree, he does not seem to understand the priciple of personal responsibility.

Maybe this single mum isn't a fan of the Opera, yet some of her taxes subsidise the National Opera. Maybe she isn't a huge fan of sports, yet she has subsudised the national stadium AND the olymics. Maybe she is a republican, yet she will subsidise the upcoming royal wedding. Maybe she uses email rather than the post, yet she subsidises the Royal Mail. Maybe she has always been happy to rent, yet she subsidised so many of the very people who have gained from the property explosion and who are now so critical of the decisions she has made..... yet they will brag about the profits SHE helped to subsidise for them while steadfastly ignoring that subsidy.

    It is.

But that generally means the UK citizen living in expensive rented is adequately housed whilst the immigrant worker who is homeless gets the housing.

I feel it's going to cause a riot by saying it but whilst we have huge levels of unemployment in the UK I feel it's wrong to keep letting people in from outside.

Every immigrant worker is causing uk unemployment and a further dependency on benefits for another generation.

If Uk people do not have the skills we would be better investing in them getting the skills employers need.

I do think some of the problem is the generous benefits system we have that enables people to live happily on the dole.

To keep this on a housing perspective, those who come to the UK on a workers visa have no recourse to public funds and are, therefore, not elligable for social housing.

So where does the subsidy for cheap rents come from?

There is no subsidy. Social Housing providers will easily run at a "surplus" on the affordable rents they charge. Just because something is cheaper, don't assume it is subsidised.

I would suspect that was some time ago, the situation is a lot different now and I would guess that in you mums situation these days she would have been worse off working. That is what annoys people.

Then stop guessing and find out. With the system of in-work benefits now available, it is a very unusual set of circumstances that would leave anyone worse off working.

I have watched many, many, many people have comfortable lives on the dole. To suggest there are not loads of people abusing the system and living easy lives is quite frankly ridiculous.

All council tennants and people claiming benefits are NOT honest, hard working people, struggling to live and putting in loads of effort. Some are, some aren't.

Have you been watching "Shameless" again? You do know that it's a drama, not a documentary?

No i've been watching real people.

If you genuinely think there are not thousands of people playing the system, then you sir, are a fool.
