You work 40 hours a week on top of getting your student loan?0 -

I'll text her now and see if she spoke to the teacher for advice! Thanks for timely reminder0 -

I've just spent some time looking through the SAAS website myself, having never been on it before. They definitely lean heavily on this is something parents should be paying for.
Neither her dad or step-dad will provide their finances (it does say they dont have too) and they will opt out. She would only be eligibile anyway for the minimum of £915 a year so no point in forcing that route anyway.
Looks like the deadline is end of March 2011 for apps.
I think someone mentioned a student over-draft? Is that something soemone could point me in the right direction of please?0 -

My post won't help with the 'in's and out's' of student loans etc. So it's probably a waste of cyber-space. You sound a wonderful mum, this thread is full of teenage angst, I borrowed my daughter's fund etc. I'm just gobsmacked at the understanding tone of the thread. I went to Uni many year's ago, and my parents didn't contribute - they couldn't afford to - and I didn't ask, much less demand, because I knew this without being told. My choice to go - I worked part-time. I can hear that you love your daughter very much and want to help as much as possible, but all I've read is she's not doing much to help herself - has she obtained all the forms & info ? has she been trawling the educational websites to work out a picture ? has she worked out finances if a happens or b happens ? or is she leaving it all to you to sort out ? It's the level of expectation (on daughter's part) that astounds me, and the guilt trip you're consequently on, that equally astounds me.

It's the family home she is living in that provide financial information not both households. My son's loans were on my income not his fathers.
It is difficult to let them go and grow up. You want to be there to help them through every step and secretly they do to. It is a frightening time growing up and taking your first steps in the adult world.
You must let go but continue to encourage them and be there when they need you. It will be worth it in the end.
Edit:
Most banks provide student accounts with different offers. It's certainly worth looking at each bank via their web sites and see what incentives they are offering, level of overdraft and graduate repayment time scale. So may offer student rail cards or other gifts. Look at what your daughter would benefit from most.£2 Coins Savings Club 2012 is £4.............................NCFC member No: 00005.........

Overdraughts depend on the bank. I've banked with RBS all the way through my degree and they were brilliant. Because of the Banking Crisis they have reduced the levels of overdraughts. I think it's £500 in year 1 now, where I got £1000 back in 2007.
If she doesn't apply for SAAS, then she will be unable to apply for any Discretionary loans from the University [I've had £600 each year.]0 -

Most student bank accounts will give some sort of overdraft, often increasing each year, but it would be a VERY BAD idea to rely on this as a primary source of funding.
Can I ask why her father and her step father both refuse to give any financial support? And is the bad relationship between your daughter and husband due to this, or the other way round?
Did your 22 year old stay with you and present DH? Did they get support?
Presumably your younger teen is a joint effort and DH will support them in the future?
Sorry, don't want to appear nosey, just trying to understand the situation.0 -
Deadline is end of March 2011 for 2010 - 2011 applications, not for students beginning studies in 2011.0

I made the choice to go to uni away from home and so i applied for all the funding i could get. my father does not contribute a penny towards me and as my mum lives on her own with 3 children i couldnt expect she paid anything for me. my funding covers fees and some living costs this is all done through student loans, i get help from my student bank with interest free overdraft and i have a job i can work during school holidays. this has been the closest to living independantly you can get, friends of mine who gt contributions regularly from their parents tend to be worse with money as their parents bail them out.Paying it all off in 2017:
