Signing On

This is a straighforward question that I hope can be answered here, and I hope I can ask it clearly.

I anm going to have to start signing on in the next couple of weeks. What i want to know is: given that I have to rely on a bus timetable that doesn't run very often throughout the day, can the jobcentre expect me to sign at another office if they are unable (or unwilling) to give me a signing time that is compatible with said buses.

Or do I have the right to demand that the office (the one in question is better for me all round, assuming they can book me in at a time that doesn't require me walking around town with nothing to do for 2 hours) accomadate me.

The JCP are very busy, they will try to accommodate your timetable but they certainly do not have to. Perhaps you could spend any waiting time visiting local businesses asking about vacancies?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I understand they are busy but i have no desire to stand around for two hours.

Expecting claimants to wander the streets knocking on the doors of the same businesses every time like Oliver Twist on the offchance they will have unadvertised vacancies is both unrealistic - places that want staff will advertise (in the jobcentre for instance).

What would an employer prefer, somewhere proactively approaching them or one of countless CVs from the JCP?

What do you intend to do for work? Few employers will tailor working hours around your bus timetable.

Surely you must be able to go and use the library or do some shopping if you don't want to approach businesses directly every fortnight.

Employers that want staff will make the fact known, no employer doesn't advertise (unless it's internal only) that they want staff and just sits back expecting people to come to them. So expecting the unemployed to jump through hoops is wasting everyone's time, including employers who'd probably rather be working than answering the door to every tom !!!!!! and harry.

If i need to use a bus to get to a job and the buses don't run when the job has its hours then the job goes to someone else. What else woudl you suggest, hire a chauffeur?

You don't appear to want a job? The JCP will expect you to be more flexible than you currently are.

  • You can pick which JCP office you wish to sign on at (you have to ask though). Word of warning, don't make it to far from home as questions will be asked

If you want people to help you on this thread you need to back off with the old chip on the shoulder sarcasm.

How far are you away from a possible job, is a bike feasible.
    Or a moped.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.
  • You never know, depending on how infrequent your buses are, the JC might be quite accommodating if you ask nicely and don't expect. I wouldn't "demand" though. That probably won't get you anywhere fast.

It is all very well people saying that you could easily kill a couple of hours whilst hanging around in town, but you will probably have no spare money to spend, if you are not going to cold call on potential employers.
