The following is a list of Bank charges that we can and cannot claim for. Different banks may have different names for the same type of charge, if you are unsure about a charge phone your bank and ASK. If anyone has different charges to add, please PM myself or Edinburghlass so we can add them.
CAN BE CLAIMED
Account misuse fee
Cheque return fee
Card misuse fee
Unarranged borrowing fee
Unauthorised overdraft fee
Unpaid DD fee
Unpaid cheque fee
Unpaid standing order fee
Late payment fee (credit cards, store cards, catalogues etc)
Exceeding Authorised Overdraft Limit
Exceeding Unauthorised Overdraft Limit
Direct Debit/Standing Order/Cheque returned fee
Irregular fee
Paid refferal fee
Total charges (HSBC personal accounts only, not business accounts)
CANNOT BE CLAIMED
Cash Machine Withdrawl Fees
Account Service Charges
Service Fee / Annual Fee
Charges related to foreign currency transactions and conversions.
Monthly account fees on certain type of accounts.
Normal overdraft interest charges
I have found your postings very useful. Can you please tell me if I should be claiming the OVERDRAFT FEE as well as the EXCESS OVERDRAFT FEE? The overdraft fee is not on your list, but FD charge this £30 fee ontop of the excess overdraft fee each month the account is over the overdraft limit.

This is my first post and I'd like to thank Martin and everyone on this forum who have given me the knowledge, confidence and motivation to claim my bank charges back.
I really didn't think claiming my charges back would be so easy! It has taken just over a week for First Direct to make me an offer which I think is both fair and reasonable.
Amount Claimed: £1196 + Interest
Amount Offered: £1000
I have posted the acceptance letter tonightOfficial DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 479 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

Hi all
A friend of mine has contacted First Direct to ask for her last 6 years worth of statements as she felt she'd paid out a fair amount in bank charges over this time. These arrived last week and when she added it all up it comes to somewhere in the region of £1250 so needless to say she's keen to claim it back.
Can I ask anyone who specifically has First Direct current account how they reacted when you claimed your charges back? Did they pay up, and if so did they put up much of a fight? Also, did they subsequently insist that they close your account?
Any experiences would be greatly appreciated.
Mal
Based upon my experience First Direct made a very good offer in just over a week and the whole process of claiming has been a doddle. I only sent one letter.
Your friend is claiming a very similar amount to my claim (£1196 + Interest, FD offered £1000) so I would say go for it.
The letter I have received does not suggest that they will close my account but I guess it would be sensible to have a parachute account setup just in case.
Hope that helps!Official DFW Nerd Club - Member no. 479 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts

Has anyone ever had their Credit card bill merged with their overdraft by FIRST DIRECT. This is what they did to me. I never went over my overdraft limit but I did not pay money in regularly. I now have a bit of money but they are demanding the full balance.
Are they allowed to merge my Credit card and overdraft, close my account and demand the full balance as well?0 -

Bank: First Direct
Reclaimed: £2386.50
Received: £2030.00
Sent a letter detailing charges on 20th April, received a letter from First Direct offering me £2030.00 in full and final settlement just one week later. I was delighted with this as I expected a tougher fight and I think it is a very fair amount so I accepted it .0 -
i am just in the process of claiming from first, I sent first letter asking for charges back on the 18th April, you give me hope i might hear shortly.
I did receive a letter to say they would be in touch within 10 days. so fingers crossed and oh yes very well done.0 -

Just thought I would add a little note..
First Direct called me today & told me they were closing my account in 30 days due to my IVA history (which cleared 3 years ago & started 8 years ago!!) They are saying it has nothing to do with the £650+ charges I got back from them in January! Im not so sure...
Keep applying for your money back & GOOD LUCK!0
