me too. take the money and run!0

Hi
My girlfriend got her bank statement today, and noticed that she accidentally wrote a cheque from the wrong account, which subsequently put her about £500 overdrawn. She is currently still £190 overdrawn. First Direct have charged her £55 for this even though she rung to say that she would clear the overdraft first thing on Monday morning.
Is it worth sending off a letter to claim this money back?? I know it is only a small amount, but she is a student and every little helps!
Any help would be much appreciated.0 -
only you can really decide if it is worth claiming, you will get your money back but the bank could close the account0

I would try calling them, if she explains her situation and asks for a refund they may well do it there and then.
I've done that a couple of times in the past and got either a full or partial refund.
Good luckBank charges refund £158

Result
Claim: £1703.16 with interest
Offered: £1300
First letter sent 26th December 06
Second letter sent threatening court proceedings on 12th Jan - got lost in post
Sent 2nd letter threatening court proceedings on 25th Jan - received
I have now received a letter offering £1300, this is without prejudice or admission of liability on their part.
I think I will accept this offer. I am now £1300 better off than I was before the TV programme. :j
Many thanks to Martin and his team and the BBC for highlighting this issue.
Keep up the good work0 -
I'm considering starting this process with First Direct as I reckon they must have charged us enough to settle the national debt over the last 6 years, which I believe is the limit.
However, we've been with them practically since they started and apart from the charges we really don't have a problem with them.
I'd be very reluctant to shift banks, not least as "Hey! why don't you owe me loads of dosh" is not generally a good opening line and we couldn't afford to settle the overdraft if the account were closed anyway.
So without going through the whole history of this board have they ever closed anybody's account and is there any other grief they can send in our direction
One other question.
What happens to the amount charged after this is all over do the banks reduce your charges or is anything like that in the pipeline.
Please feel free to just flag up relevant posts as I know how irritating it can be when people ask the same questions all the time.0 -

As you won't get an "offer" including the interest, in fact its quite a good offer and probably worth taking and would save you having to start the court process.0
