  • I exist without JSA, a job or ANY benefits..I am losing my house in 3 weeks and will be living without running water etc so I am 100% sure you are doing better then me.

So I won't bother replying to the rest as I think you are doing slightly better then me and I wasn't quite so rude either.

Gothicfairy.......... I wonder just how much YOU pay for water? why should the South West have to pay for the upkeep of the coast line for the thousands of people who visit every year.

As for your remarks about :

[QUOTE=Gothicfairy;4 how can £35 per month for fresh, safe , clean running water 24/7 be DISGUSTING ?
it might be high but how much would it cost for you to buy all your water from the superstore?
How about all the people who die daily from lack of clean water ?

I won't even bother to reply, apart from saying, you try existing on a very small pension

Possibly because the South West depends on tourism for much of it's income and employment, and those tourists are likely to be less keen to visit if they have to swim about in sewage?
I grew up there in the 70's, and at that time most coastal towns simply discharged their sewage straight into the sea, with maceration being the only treatment given. Virtually every sewage works in the region has now got proper secondary treatment facilities, but of course this does not come cheap.
SWW is the most expensive in the country, but at £1.15 a day for clean water and waste removal, it's still good value.
I'm willing to bet that many people would spend far more than that on things like subscription TV and think nothing of it.

You still haven't said how many people live in your house I guess from the above it's likely to be at most 2. That would make your per person consumption around 160 litres per person per day. That is not efficient usage of water and you could use a lot less. It's a bit above average use and average use is not water efficient. 100 litres per day average use is very achievable.
There's no sense crying over every mistake.

OP, according to the SWW website, the increase in overall charges that OFWAT have agreed for 2010/11 is 1.4%. The highest increase will be on unmetered accounts, as you would expect, so as you are on a meter the increase in water charges (i.e. excuding sewerage charges) should be less than 1%. Please can you confirm where you got the information about an 8% increase?

    Your generalisation is somewhat wide of the mark;

SW Water customers do not have "to pay for the upkeep of the coast" - they have to pay for the sewage to be treated to such a condition that it can be safely disposed of. In the SW most of it goes into the sea, inland it goes into rivers.

All the "grockles and emmets" do pay their share; all the hotels/cafes/gift shops, etc will build in allowance for what they are paying for their water - this is paid for by the visitor.

It is 8.1%. See here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-12554008

I disagree with your point re beach cleanliness. The standards for this are set regardless of how many people use them and have to be met. Beaches are for everyone so a fair way to pay for this would be for all water companies to contribute to this cost and not place the additional burden just on the companies that cover coastal regions.

I have just paid my latest water bill (meter on actual readings) of 13 cu mtrs for a qtr. cost £69.00. This is fairly low usage and double what it would cost in the London area.

If water bills were brought into line with our prices I wonder how many would consider they were getting good value.

That BBC article say 'up to' 8.1%. It does not say that that will be the average increase. According to the figs on the SWW website, the increase will be heavily weighted to non-metered customers (around 4%), but metered customers will pay more like 1%. The BBC have simply grabbed 8.1% as it makes for a better shock headline.
With inflation at 4%, that is standing still.

Also when the water companies supply their figures for the press they are allowed to state "up to XX" as that will be a rise for RV, one for metered and one for commercial so overall it might well be 8% but that is split between more types of billing and customers.

I am not going to go to much into the op's issue as that would just waste my time and yours reading it but 10 CM (cubic meters) per month is not going to be one person unless there is a problem or high usage and don't forget that there are standing charges added etc.

I stick by my earlier post though and agree with Macman, for clean water just over a quid a day is not half bad..try getting that with superstore bottled stuff

If it makes you feel any better (I doubt it) I'm also with SWW and we have high water usage (2 kids, one of which disabled and wets the bed). I just paid up my water (missed the last bill): over £400

ETA: That is despite being careful with water - honestly! There are some houses in the village that are not metered (ex council, can't be metered as they have shared supply) and I am jealous when I see them watering the garden, washing the car, etc.

Are you on a meter ? if so apply for watersure as that will cap your bills and if your child is disabled and needs more water then you should qualify
