I am struggling to write this i am so angry, South West water have just announced that they will be increasing their charges by 8%!!! We already pay the highest bills in the country, but they are really taking the 'michael' now.

We can choose all out other utilities, but not water...............and as we cannot manage without water, we are suck with them It is OUTRAGEOUS

  • Have you got a meter? If not get one and then use water efficiently and you should pay considerably less.

Easy for you to say. I too am with South West Water. I have a meter. We (2 adults 2 kids) are extremely efficient with water usage and yet my last bill was £165 for 3 months. When I lived in Coventry my water rates were £24 a month. South West water are exortionate because we have to pay for all the coastline so the rest of the country can come down and enjoy it as do we obviously, but surely it would be fairer for everyone to pay a little something towards it?

What is your actual consumption over that 3 month period?

Backontrack. Thanks for your patronizingcomment. I already have a water meter, I am ALSO careful with my water usage.

My usage is approx 10 cubic metre's a month for which I pay approx £35 per month
    Its DISGUSTING

Can't say offhand, I'm not at home, but I can assure you we are careful with our water, using a lot less than we ever did in Coventry because we simply can't afford to be extravagant with it. We all have timed showers, no running taps, boiling right amount of water, saving water for the garden etc etc I could go on but see no need to. My point is, it IS expensive in the South West, regardless of your consumption, and to have another 8% lumped on top doesn't help.

My comment wasn't meant to be patronizing. Can I ask how many people live in your house?

  • Yes south west water are very expensive and you don't have a choice of supplier however because of this water companies do not set their own prices they are controlled by Ofwat. Increases in price are very much linked to the investment required for the water and sewerage network and is not just money in the pocket of water company shareholders.

We are with Southwest Water, there are two of us and we both shower and use a dishwasher daily, plus several loads of machine washing each week, we are paying £25 a month and I keep a regular check to make sure we do not get into debit.

I know I am going to get hung for this but how can £35 per month for fresh, safe , clean running water 24/7 be DISGUSTING ?
it might be high but how much would it cost for you to buy all your water from the superstore?
How about all the people who die daily from lack of clean water ?

I do understand your point but I am afraid that I think this country has one of the best water systems and that we should be grateful for some of it because even in parts of the EU on tap water is not the norm.
We pay £100's for gas and electric but complain about water bills..what is that ?
Yes we should be able to choose but to be honest I am not sure it would be cheaper as it is OFWAT that set the prices anyway.

Gothicfairy.......... I wonder just how much YOU pay for water? why should the South West have to pay for the upkeep of the coast line for the thousands of people who visit every year.

As for your remarks about :
