11 year old son wants to buy present for girlfriend!

Hi to everyone, just a small dilema concerning my youngest, he's 11 and very charming and popular, now he has told me he has a girlfriend, who he said (lol bless) Im quite serious about and I'd like to buy her a present!
Well, they are at school together, in the same class, and they walk home together from school and they see each other at youth club on a Friday night.
There isnt anything for me to be worried about as I have always brought my children up to be respectful and they are very good kids and well mannered, but this does seem a little young to me!
Last night he asked if we could buy his girlfriend a Birthday present, he'd like to get her a piece of jewellry
So i thought maybe something like a little teddy bear (me to you ones) and maybe a simple silver bracelet around teddies neck would be nice and not too expensive
But, I really wanted to see what everyone else thought so I didnt do something that would annoy her parents.
I have to add though she texts him constantly and he seems very smitten with her.
Any advice would be appreciated!
Thankyou!

This would be something that would concern me also. Have you met the girl/the parents? I am sure it is all innocent, but as the mother of a 12 year old girl I would be very concerned if she brought home a gift from a "boyfriend".
I think a non romantic gift would be more appropriate than jewellery or teddies. Possibly something crafty or some smellies for the bath.0 -
Ha ha how cute ? i never remeber having a serious boyfriend at 11, i dont think her parents would be offended as long as its just a small jesture like you say a silver braclet ,Its not a diamond engament ring so i dont think they will be too worried ! young love so cute0

How about a friendship bracelet, ideally handcrafted, maybe mum can help. Wasn't there this craze a year ago when they all made these things, forgotten what they were called - Not very helpful, sorry :doh:He who asks is a fool for five minutes, but he who does not ask remains a fool forever.

What a nice lad you have raised. Isn't it a shame that when someone wants to do something thoughtful, we, as a society stop and question it. I'm not having a go, I know exactly where you're coming from. Kids seem to grow up so quickly these days. Maybe just the teddy and some chocs, not quite such a 'grown up' pressie.0

Hi
I really wouldn't worry about it. In my son's year 6 there was a bit of a 'craze' on all the boys having a girlfriend. my daughter is 9 and when the boy that 'wanted to be her boyfriend' went on summer holiday he brought her a little something back.
Take him to Claire's that would be a 'cool' place to get a pocket money priced piece of jewellery.0 -
Many thanks for all your replies
I havent met the girl but will probably see her tonight when I drop DS off at youth club or pick him up.
I do like the idea of a little teddy still with a little bracelet, but maybe not a silver one.
He obviously thinks highly of her to speek to me about her and he is a very thoughtfull little boy, at least if the little bracelet is around teddies neck then it can stay there or be worn by her.
I dont seem to have had any major no no's from anybody so hopefully I wont be doing the wrong thing.
Thankyou so much. xx0 -
A couple of years ago, DS1 (just turned 12) came home with a present he'd bought for his girlfriend. A Cubic Zirconia Solitaire - £15 from Index
I basically pointed out to him that although it was a lovely gesture, I didn't think that buying a ring that looks like an engagement ring would go down too well with her parents. I then took him back to the shop and he exchanged it for a little pendant - which made him very popular with lots of girls in school, who all wished they had him as their "boyfriend".0 -

My 11 year old also has a gf - they got together in Junior school, then split up over the holidays, but have now got back together again (Even though they go to different schools!)
They've already been 'on a date' to the pictures chaparoned by her parents
Thanks for the present ideas, as I have a feeling this is a subject that's going to be mentioned in this house too.......
PS - for the record, I had an 11 year old bf when I was just 9, and boy did I get a ribbing from my friends for sitting under his coat and having a snog in the playground at Jnr. school. Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.0 -
I have 2 boys (12 & 15), and as I know that they are well brought up, considerate boys, and they wanted to do what your son wanted to do, then I would indulge him a little and let him get a gift.....I would also be secretly pleased that he wasn't embarrassed to come to me over it, and that you are setting a good foundation for openess in the future - well handled, I say :T0
