I have a small mortgage and it looks like the balance has come down by about £416:D

    Very happy!
  • We just received a letter and a credit for £1505 for an average Mortgage balance of £65000 over the period, not bad.!

I have to agree with earlier contributor, whilst we can complain about the amounts, notification of the change etc, the documents did state that they could alter the % offset from base rate, so they didn't do anything wrong as such. In our case we always had the option to move to another provider, but the deals out there did not generally offer massively better terms / rates

I personally want to thank Halifax:j
  • hi just found out about this whole thing the other day when i got a letter saying i would get a goodwill payment of £1650 into my mortgage account, alarm bells started ringing after reading the 3 page letter i was none the wiser to what was going on so i called the number on the letter.

i spoke to one adviser who was just spouting the same crap that was on the letter so asked to speak to a supervisor. i kept asking if this was a overpayment but they would not give me a straight answer. i asked when i would see the benefit and was told this would not take place till i changed my mortgage product to which i then asked could i not get the money into my account or get it in a cheque they said yes this was possible in form of a cheque... result!!!

i have to say that i think its shocking that the halifax are being so fly as they dont state anywhere on the letter this money can be paid to customers in a cheque. in the letter they use words like 'goodwill payment' 'we apologizes for the inconvenience' and 'you dont need to take any action'

i know people are thanking the halifax but do you really think they would be doing this as a goodwill gesture "i dont think so" its clearly a overpayment to which the halifax have made more on interest than there paying out.

i would advise anyone who gets this letter in from halifax to get the money off them in form of a cheque as they clearly dont want this to be paid out in this way.

    halifax bunch of crooks!!!!!

The status of the mortgage account at the time of the request may well determine the decision. So not a one fits all outcome.

I received a letter saying that I would receive a goodwill payment of £1875, and after reading on here that people had been able to receive that as a cheque I rang the number on the letter the lady asked a few questions and took a few details and said I would receive a cheque in the next 14 days.

I noticed my mortgage balance had went down and called to check by how much. Turns out it was £1450.

I asked for a cheque for the amount and was told it could only come of my balance. So I pointed out that I knew of others who had received a cheque.

I was then told that they could make a request for payment as a cheque but it wasn't guaranteed.

I am in a negative equity situation at present, or close to one (mortgage and house are probably about the same in value). My mortgage however is fully up to date and I have never missed a single payment, so no arrears or anything. I have no wish to move and will happily ride out the negative equity. I have a more pressing issue for which I now require the money (car trouble).

Was slightly annoyed with the whole conversation really. While I appreciate this is a nice windfall, we shouldn't have to go cap in hand and ask for the cash like we are and in my case feel like I am asking for something I shouldn't be.

I think this is typical of the Halifax (and probably other banks), I've rung up over different things over the years and been told one thing by one person and another thing by another - I've had 3 or 4 different versions in the past!

In all fairness I think some of it is down to the vast knowledge they must now possess in terms of product, policy and system functionality - they're only human and some of these queries don't crop up THAT often

I think if you've got a more urgent need for the cash then fair enough, but one previous poster sounded like they wanted that cheque just to spite the big bad bank :rotfl:

I am more than happy for a reduction on the mortgage - it's knocked over 5 months of my mortgage life and reduced how much interest I'm paying back every month.

I've had a letter stating that I've been given just over £3000 from Halifax as a goodwill payment. Yay! I didn't think it applied to me, so what a nice surprise!
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)
  • I've been sitting on the SVR since January 2009 to present. Letter stated my mortgage had been credited £1340. Rang Halifax up and requested a cheque which they said was no problem and I should receive within 14 days. Halifax mention goodwill payment (after 'discussions' with the FSA). I'm not really fussed how it's came about as I'll be on a beach in the Phillipines or Malaysia with the cash! I know some people on here will be thinking about reducing the mortgage but all work and no play makes Graham a very dull boy! :rotfl:

my mortgage was credited £1590 last week after reading the posts on here today i have just phoned up and requested a cheque so i can pay it off the credit card
its a shame halifax cant put a sentence in the 3 page letter saying this is a option as im sure this would help a lot of families like my own finding things a bit hard at the moment, very under handed but wouldnt expect anything less from the halifax

the only people i would like to thank is the members of this forum for the advice which is very helpful
    THANK YOU
