Well all i can say is DO NOT buy the basics B&Q value white paint. It is absolutely rubbish, it took about 6 coatings to paint over magnolia. Its like water. Instead we went and bought the next one up of B & Q one coat, literally does take 1 coat. Its fab and doesn't hurt your chest like the value one does. I'm doing my passage white again, as its cheaper than any other colour.
May be have a look on your local market for fabric, every tuesday theres one here, where the lady sells really good material about a £1 a yard and end of rolls for even less.

Greent my OH is the same, been out of work since Jan, volunteering could do wonders for him. Being out of the house might do him some good. I know its helped me out.

Kittie i didn't know anything about it till my boys told in when they came home from school. Its devastating. MAkes me feel so privileged to live where we do.

Kitschy i use about a teaspoon per load , but i am stingy. The last time i bought non-bio washing powder ( a 30 wash) was back in November and i ahem have about less than 1/4 of the box left ahem.
If the clothes arereally dirty i add another teapoon or so aslo along with about a teaspooon of stain blaster. The one i get is called oxi from home bargains for about 99p. I never follow the guidelines on the package. Actually reading that back we sound filthy. I also wash everyday so it lasts quite a long time.

Thanks for the tips guys! I actually forgot about Johnstones paint and its made just up the road from me:o I don't actually know if they sell to the public from there but I will look next time I am passing.
I also forgot I have a pair of aubergine silk curtains that I have no use for in the bottom of my wardrobe , so can use that to make some cushion covers. I also have a box full of ribbons which I can use to jazz them up a bit so I have another project to tackle;)

Sorry your oh is having a tough time finding work greent..its very demoralising isnt it. Hopefully he will find something soon x

Yikes! DH has just filled the car up - £76!
Cheapest in town was £1.30 per litre.

:( despite working to a carefully planned list, I was well over budget this week :( I got a fresh chicken marked down to £2 and 3 x 6pcks of muller corners for £3.67 at Lidl - counterbalanced by having to pay 99p for a small bottle of vanilla essence.

My OS thought for the day was to start taking a bag with me on dog walking expeditions.....it will be quick and easy to gather a bagful of twigs throughout the year, ready for firemaking next Autumn :)

    Fingers crossed for you Kidcat!!

Thank you - you don't sound filthy at all! I mostly use half a tablet! If you wash every day, and don't do exercise/sweat/roll around in mud, there's no point in (a) washing things every time you wear them (unless they're undie things) or (b) wasting really hot water and loads of detergent on them - they generally only need a freshen up!

Writing that I am now classing myself as officially uncool - if my teenage self heard me saying that she would die of shame. I used to try things on and then put them in the wash (read bedroom floor) after 5 seconds :rotfl:

    Hi

Washing - I use half the recommended washing powder amount and for the washing liquid - I water it down and also do the same with the softener. I'm looking at buying a Twin Tub to do some smaller loads in - loved my twin tub!! DH will go mad [space issues] but I'm sure he'll get over it [or do the washing himself!!] It will save on water and leccy as its a small twin tub.

I also use half the recommended washing powder. I use a teaspoon of vinegar as a softener.
Undies and shirts / T-shirths are washed after one day's wear.
I had a very bad experience with a twin tub the first time I used one (after we came home from honeymoon) !!!
It involved MOUNTAINS of suds that wouldn't go away. DH had gone to bed!!!
I don't ever want another one. Silver x

:) Brief visit today as my parents are about to arrive to spend a few hours allotmenteering with me.

ChocClare The recipe will be duly named for your MSE handle; most of my recipes are acquired from someone and I like to name-check them in my folder. Loved it lots and just had to have a glass of red wine with it as you'd made me open a bottle anyway.....:rotfl:

Bertiebots If money is so tight that the pips are squeaking for paint etc, have you thought of asking on Freecycle? Apparently, about a quarter of all paint purchased for home use is never used and there may well be something going which is useful to you. I regularly see it coming and going on my group and have offloaded some varnishes of my own to a grateful member. I'd also suggest washing the walls and woodwork down with sugar soap before making a definitive decision to paint as sometimes things get a little dingy so slowly that we don't notice and think that we need a repaint and we can get away without it (no disrespect to anyone's housecleaning btw, I'm going to wash my walls as part of my autumn cleaning this year as it'll be 6 years since I painted them and I haven't washed them since then....:o)

Getting pensioners to front the deal Ha ha, my pensioner parents are bringing my potting compost from Focus this morning (10% off any day of the week). Maryb's tip is a good 'un.

Tip from a CommunityRe-paint organiser I have a slight acquaintance with one of these and he told me that he has checked with all the major paint manufacturers and there is no problem with mixing different paints together if you lack the quantity or the right shade but with the following proviso; mix type with same type (i.e. a vinyl silk with a vinyl silk NOT a matt) and its best not to cross-mix manufactuers. You'll need to stir very well initially and keep stirring as you go. I've also used a while emulsion to tone down an agressive colour before repainting a paler colour on top, as the white is always cheaper, as someone up here pointed out

:( Well, Idiot Boy and Idiot Girlfriend excelled themselves last night. Came crashing in at 4 am, crashing out at 4.20am, crashing in at 5.30 am and gawd knows when they shut up because I put my industrial ear-defenders on.

:D Folks have arrived with some of my h.g frozen peas from last years harvest so must get on with RL (whatever that is)!

Have a brill day, whatever y'all doing......
