Yea loads of people also say that they have probs growing swede, never mind theres always plenty for sale in the shops.....I absolutely love swede,:j and would and do eat it at most dinners I cook, im addicted to it...........I could so easily eat a full plate for dinner with nothing else................:D
My granddad always grew swede with no probs, although I thought they were turnips -as thats what he called them (i knew no different till I actually purchased some myself when I left home!:D)..... and we used to have them for Halloween instead of pumpkins! Hmmm the smell of singed swede due to the candle sticks in my memory for some reason:rotfl:JAN GC- £155.77 out of £200FEB GC £197.31 out of £180:o. MARCH GC - out of £200

This got me thinking about stuff we all do - unconsidered trifles, making summat from nowt - that cost nothing to do, that have no value in themselves but with a little ingenuity and a lot of love can make life a little sweeter...gathering little bunches of lavender for friends in towns or nursing homes, drying rose petals and herbs to freshen the home through winter, splitting perenials to share with neighbours, growing a few extra veg to 'gift'its the sort of stuff that endures and gets us through even when times are tough
Charlies-aunt..thats a lovely idea..i'm going to try that..give my veg and fruit and flowers..love the idea of the rose petals..how do you dry them?..its true what you say..that sort of stuff endures and is remembered for what it is..kindness..

Bertiebots...we call swedes turnips in Ireland...and I love them too, we sowed some last year but they didn't grow well and were full of wireworms, going to try some more this year, although we have more or less decided to stay with things that are never cheap in shops....peppers, courgettes, tomatoes, aubergines, various beans and herbs.

Guess that doesnt concern anyone getting "mileage" on cars used for work purposes - as I've just spotted a query on the Jobs Board re costs of getting to work. In that thread someone pointed out that HMRC allows 40p per mile "mileage" for first 10,000 miles and 25p per mile thereafter. As we worked out on here - petrol actually costs 19p per mile for a "standard petrol user" car and therefore those on "mileage" are making a profit from this (unless they personally chose to have a "heavy petrol user" car).
Nope they don't cover 40p a mile, maybe in london where prices are higher, but where i am in north east its 15p a mile. My OH recieved £14 back for his travel costs for a job interview and got a fraction of the cost back. He had another in North Wales and the job centre said we'll cover £25, he replied but its will cost me £65- £85 in fuel. So unfortunately he lost a good job, we couldn't afford the fuel. That's why last week i was so down in the dumps.
aw no pawpurrs hope something comes up soon.
FTM love your cushions and the lotty, very talented lady:)
(((hugs redlady)))
Well had another carp day, OH didn't get paid yet again, so from 21/1/2011 we've had no income, cracking. Apprently we should be getting paid on Monday. Like that'll happen.
We had a big bust up, because i was so stressed with everything,, i didn't fancy a nasty pasty from a carp town bakery, un like the biys and OH, swear OH is worse than a kid sometimes.. I ended up cooking which i couldn't as i was over hungry with stomach acid. So were eating it tomorrow instead..
Don't get me wrong he's the love of my life, but when he's stressed well he's so ratty, even the rats legs it. He's just depressed because he outs of work.
Anyways tomorrow i' going to tke the boys to ldil to see what i can get. Looks like a deal where you get 2 fruit trees for £10 or 4 fruits tree for £5.
Been clearly out the yard today and t was so cold myfingers turned blue. Brrr, but it looks so much better. Going to try and get the rest of it sorted out tomorrow. The i start sowing some peas and salad leaves.
Right off to sleep as i'm shattered, grumpy and cold.

hi folks been lurking and thought i'd post! well like everyone else am concerned about car/petrol costs, unfortunately have 2 cars but am going to get my bike out tomorrow and start trying to get a bit fitter and be able to bike to work or pop to the shops, even if manage to cut £10 a week off the cost it will hopefully help towards the increase in insurance, find like most working mums/dads that time is the issue - takes 7 mins in the car and 40 to walk to work, hopefully take about 15 on the bike on the way there but will take alot longer coming home as its all uphill!!!! am off to lidl in the morning to get some seeds and bits and pieces and start growing my own stuff as much as possible and am actually going to put my jeans that need a new zip into the shop rather than throw them out and get a new pair which two years ago would never have crossed my mind! finding it hard though telling the kids (12 & 15) that they cant have this or that - tonight both threw a big paddy as they wanted carryout pizza for supper -no way £22 for two pizza thats a weeks shopping some weeks, will start making the artisan bread thats mentioned in one of the threads so will always have stuff they can throw together to make their own.
cant get over how worried i am as everyone else at work, friends etc doesnt seem to be bothered about everything shooting up in prices and i know they are not any better off than what i am but they just carry on spending, which makes me worry even more about budgeting - is it just me?skintbint x

Gordon Bennett, yesterday a toughie in the council call centre where I earn my shilling. Seemed that every loose screw within 40 miles was on the blower to us. Wasn't helped by the fact that some of the colleagues had been taken away to train the newbies (it's done one-on-one with twin headsets btw). They'd chosen Friday to do this as it's typically the quietest day of the week, but Murphy's Law dictated that because we were short-handed the call volumes went sky-high. And the calls were sooooo bizarre. A colleague said to me; "Is it the full moon or something?!"
It wasn't, but I did just look at Hardup Hester's blog and her lunar calendar thingie (which I adore, HH, if you're reading) says it's now new moon 0% of full, which set me wondering.......
When I was first in my job, the housing dept used to keep a phases of the moon calender on the wall. Just a photocopied one from somewhere. It wasn't whimsy, it was because they'd discovered the hard way that people behaved more bizarrely at both the new and full moon. If you have to go into small interview rooms with people who may already be under the influence of drink and/ or drugs, you want to know if there's anything which might make it even riskier. They don't do it any more, they have CCTV in there. My team notice lots of crazy calls at full moon.
As you can see by the time of this post, I'm having an insomniac moment, something which can happen to me at the new and full moon, so I guess that makes me a lunatic.:rotfl:Anyone else out there similarly afflicted?
((((((((((((Hugs to those with job losses and poorly pets, and anyone else who needs one)))))))))))))))Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
