I have just watched something on iplayer. It is to do with comic relief. Jesus, we dont have life tough. We have food in our bellies and medical facilities, we can bury our dead and have running water and flushing toilets, the ability to grow food, heat, clothes, families...A big big reality check. Guess it is all relative in some way but there really is someone always worse off than you - alot worse off.

Mrs VP - I just hope they can talk to each other before its too late.

KL - pleased it is all coming togeter. I too, have just planted some more seeds so am crossing my fingers they come through ok. The spare room looks like a greenhouse and I am just waiting for Fat Knacker to knock it all over! That said, that would involve her moving from in front of the fire and the likelihood of that happening is zero!!! :rotfl:

    Hi all

I went to fill my watering can up today from our massive plastic water butt for the first time since the frosts and discovered that it is bone dry with a cracked bottom.

In a true mendnmakedo fashion, I would like to seal the cracks. Does anyone know if bathroom sealant would work??

I wouldn't think so because the weight of water in it when it's full would exert a great deal of pressure on any crack and probably force it open again. It would have to be an incredibly strong sealant to do the trick and possibly even Superglue might not do it. Plastic watering cans can probably be bought fairly cheaply in places like Poundland or B & Q so it may be safer to buy a new one, otherwise you risk suddenly finding the whole contents of your can flooding out over your feet if the base suddenly gives way. If you were filling your can from your kitchen sink tap and you lost the lot on your kitchen floor you might not be very happy!

Jumblejack, my dad had a crack in a water butt after last winter and fixed it with pond tape.

Has lasted this winter with no further problems.
He went to a local garden centre that sold pond stuff and bought 1/2mtr for £2.50 a lot less than a new one.
He did try silicone sealant but had trouble getting it to stay where he wanted it so gave up.

Hi jumblejack...hubby mended ours by using a hot knife and moulding the plastic around the crack into the crack and then using the hot knife to smooth it over..it worked..hasn't leaked since...he said leave it to set before putting water back in..and for double safety when its done seal it with waterproof sealant on the outside...hth..

You can get sealant from aquarium shops which are supposed to withstand water but a new can would be cheaper. However I agree mending something is a lot more satisfying so I would be inclined to try the melting trick
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
