The purpose of a stop sign is to make drivers stop.

That's not the purpose. The purpose is to make drivers look properly.

Making drivers stop is just a simple way of achieving that purpose.

I don't, I always bring my car to a complete stop at a stop sign, not worth the risk of getting points for a few seconds on a journey.

It may save fuel but not £60 worth.

Devil's advocate mode here, but you need to multiply the fuel saved by the number of times you're likely to get away with it before being caught.

For what it's worth. I do stop, purely as a CYA measure, but I have no objection to those who perform a rolling stop in a safe manner.

    .

I don't agree, the purpose of a Stop sign is to enforce by law that a driver stops at the stop line.

If a driver then proceeds without looking properly, that is another ball game.

    We're getting pedantic now.

The purpose of that law is to make drivers look properly.

So why do you think they make drivers stop at certain specific junctions? Just for the hell of it?

No, these are just guidelines. They are not mandatory and it is up to any individual police officer to use their discretion. If, in their opinion, the speed is inappropriate and dangerous, even at thirty-one, they can prosecute for an offence. If, for example, a car drives at thirty-two mile per hour down a residential street, with only enough room for one car to pass safely, or if passed a school, it is likely that any officer will issue a ticket for speeding.

Maybe, but if that ticket is challenged, then the police will lose, as your speedo is allowed a 10% discrepancy. I have yet to hear of anybody being prosecuted for speeding in a car for a 10% over the speed limit offense.

So if you stopped, didn't look and crossed an empty junction what would the offence be?

If you didn't stop you could get a ticket for failing to do so.
