Indicating and roundabouts.......what's your policy?

  • I am a keen cyclist and I have noticed a lot lately that hardly any cars indicated that they are overtaking me thus warning cars behind of oncoming cyclists.

I hate people who take the left hand lane then indicate right.... I never know what the hell they're doing and you get that awkward "am I about to get cut up?" moment.

There's a roundabout in Inverness which has 2 lanes entering it at one section. The left lane can be used to turn left OR right. Most people don't bother looking at the road markings and wrongly just assume left lane = left and right lane = right.

The problem comes when drivers waiting to enter the roundabout assume if you're in the left lane you're turning left and they then pull out in front of you.

Admittedly this is the only roundabout I have seen like this and it does seem to go against the usual rules.

There really should only be one policy, the correct one as advised in the Highway Code, if we all do our own thing, things get very confusing and sometimes messy.

I doubt anyone could honestly quote that policy though (without googling, etc), unless they are a driving instructor.

If I'm turning left, I'll indicate left.

If I'm going straight on I won't indicate.

If I'm turning right I'll indicate right until I get *just* past the exit before the one I want, where I'll idicate left as I'm leaving the roundabout.

Just to tie things together.....I once was knocked over riding my bike on a roundabout (in Cambridge, donkey's years ago). Quite a shock it was.

Can't remember who (if anyone) was at fault or if indicating was involved, though I suspect it might have been.

If I'm turning left, I'll indicate left on approach and when on the roundabout.

If I'm going straight on, I'll do nothing until I pass the first exit, and then indicate left to take the next exit.

If I'm going right, I'll indicate right until I pass the penultimate exit, and then indicate left to take the next exit.

If Marley is in the passenger seat, I'll invariably forget to indicate and he'll tell me off ;)

  • I always indicate and at least try to get in the correct lane (get it wrong occasionally when don't know where I'm going)!! I learned to drive over 30 years ago and this is how I was taught according to the (then) highway code.

I'm not known for my powers of retention (understatement) so if I can remember these simple rules why can't others? Espesh "youngsters" i.e., under 50's, lol!

I'm convinced it would save so much congestion if people would just indicate instead of leaving motorists etc waiting to get on the roundabout to sit there like lemons waiting there just to see them dissapear off the previous exit. Indicating is not difficult is it? Grrr

    Nope. No need.
