Indicating and roundabouts.......what's your policy?

Germany has an interesting approach to this question.
They don't indicate at all until leaving the roundabout, treating the circle as an extension of the road in effect, and the exit as a left (right) hand turn.
Quite a sensible approach -- typical German efficiency, and it works because dissenters are not tolerated -- they will be reminded of their transgression by other road users.
It removes all ambiguity -- if no indication, assume they'll be coming around past you.0 -
Instead of expecting other drivers to guess where you are going or use your wait and see method, you could try indicating. It's not difficult and other road users will appreciate it.If you are at my 9 o'clock position and I am going anywhere but 1st exit, my speed and direction will make it impossible for you to arrive and enter the roundabout safely thus there is no point in indicating to you. You could indicate to show you are not turning left. Not always neccesary, depends on the island.
If you are at my 12 o'clock (and I am going straight over) you will see from my speed and direction of travel I am not coming anywhere near your position so you can do what you like. If you are not indicating I will be waiting for you to indicate. If you indicate left I can pull out without waiting. Without indication, you may be turning right. If you are and I pull out you will drive into me.
If you are at my 12 o'clock and I turn right, you will see me going slower and hugging the RBt kerb, I will be waiting for you to indicate as you may be going straight on or turning right, without indication I will be guessing. you will see I haven't gone straight and you will know I am coming your way, I will more than likely indicate on exit but it is a rather futile gesture not for drivers waiting to join the island seeing as by that time you have no room to enter the RBt anyway. Whilst I was going slower and hugging the kerb, you maybe will have had time to enter the RBt and up to you if you take that opportunity or not.
If I am taking the first exit, my speed and direction will allow you to safely enter the roundabout because you will have already seen where I have gone.If you indicated you are turning left I could pull out and would not have to wait until you had gone.0 -

If I'm going straight on I won't indicate.
If I'm turning right I'll indicate right until I get *just* past the exit before the one I want, where I'll indicate left as I'm leaving the roundabout.
Same here, but I will indicate left just after exit before the straight on exit I am taking. I indicate on empty roads too
Think the problem with roundabouts is when you are taking the exit straight opposite you can use either the left or right hand lanes. I have been side swiped by a lorry which was using the right hand lane (the majority stick left) then cut up if I use the right hand lane.

There is one RBt that I use on the A49 at Cockhedge in Warrington - If i'm going from Tesco towards Town Centre I will use the left lane for going right. This is cos the right hand lane is littered with people who are taking the 4th exit back almost back on them selfs, so the left lane is always empty. And works. Always.0

If in doubt as to what to do....reflect on this...if your subsequent actions would result in a serious fault on a driving test, then the standard has fallen below that of a 'competent & careful driver!'
This mean the offence of 'driving without due care, etc' has been committed.
Ignorance is no excuse.
I never ever have problems at roundabouts.....I care not about the others.
After all, every driver has the same opportunity of learning..if they cannot be bothered, why should I stress myself out over it?No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Ahh those sensible Germans

You don't seem to get the concept, If you were there waiting, you would have been there before me and could have gone already. If I arrived before you, I would be going left already by the time you had arrived. Open your eyes and observe peoples trajectories. Car's cannot do 90° turns, you're thinking of UFOs
not for drivers waiting to join the island
No, again I will be driving out of the roundabout, I am not driving a UFO, use your observation and logic. You'd hardly see the indicator anyway (if at all) as it would be on the opposite side of the car to your observation point.
