Buy to Let trash

Hi,

I have been looking for a place to rent for a while.

My problem is that almost all the places I look at cost alot of money to rent, and all are offered by serial landlords who probably bought the property to let it.

I am not a mean or horrible person, but I simply can't stomach paying rent to pay off mortgages (+some) of buy to let landlords who I genuinely think are the worst people in society today. I think I could be friends with a murderer before I could be friends with one of these idiots with 100 properties, renting them out thinking they are some big shot

Is there an estate agents out there which only deals with properties that are rented out by normal people (i.e. someone with a property they inherited, or they moved and couldnt sell so rented it out)? Maybe a site where people rent out rooms in their own houses?

I just see buy-to-let as the reason many of us young people are screwed out of buying a house and pushed into paying abnormally high rents because the buy to let scum have a monopoly on rental properties. And I do not want to reward these people.
I am not a financial expert, and the post above is merely my opinion.:j

I honestly would not care, or think it any of my business, what the owners circumstances are. If you can't stomach paying off someones mortgage then I suggest you save enough money for a deposit and then buy your own home. You'll probably get funny looks if you ask an EA to find you a suitable property and then continue to say that the owner must not be making financial gain through you paying their mortgage payments. However it is fine to pay rent to someone with a paid off mortgage (who could previously have been the "buy to let trash" you talk about).

    Happy hunting!

Well in that case, get off your !!!!, work harder, earn more and then you can BUY a really lovely place of your own and not have to be involved with a BTL LANDLORD.

    Talk about sweeping generalisations.

  • If you do buy just be careful as it might be owned by a BTL person who has decided to sell.

Best thing is to build a tree house or go and find a cave to live in!

OP: life sucks, my friend. And landlords are not normal people.

The selling off of council houses and the unlimited amounts of housing benefits that are currently being paid has ruined the housing market in this country.
Everyone is entitled to my opinion!

That's the way of it. Landlords with higher numbers of properties are in business. Businesses acquire in order to provide goods or services in return for payment.

Avis, Hertz etc buy cars so that they can hire them to the public.
Other businesses buy hand tools and hire them to the public
Others buy heavy plant machinery and hire it to other businesses

Why are rental properties any different?

If you think you're more secure with a homeowner who's letting out their one residence to you, then you should read this thread -

The average age to buy a house without help from parents is almost 40 (I think). This was a recent study.

So I could save up to buy a house but it will take me 10-15 years and I have to live somewhere in the mean time!

But with rising rents (due to BTL monopoly), still high house prices (due to BTL people snapping up every house possible), high student debts and lack of jobs for young people (caused by the credit crunch which was made alot worse by the housing bubble which came from BTL landlord and the banks artifically increasing demand for houses) - these factors = going to take me a while to save up for a deposit thanks!

Add in inflation and its going to be even harder to save money for me.

I dont wwant to reward the people who are ruining the lives of all young people like me, so I want to rent somewhere that doesnt help these people. If you cant help me do this then there is no point you posting in this topic:T

The trouble with the "I can't sell so I'll rent it out" brigade is that they tend not to regard themselves as having moved out, and often want back in at a moment's notice, with scant regard to your, the tenant's, rights in law.

Google 'Suzy Butler' or search this forum for the name for an example.

I feel a tent is your only option, maybe £24.95 from Argos.

If you post like the original post then you'll get people's backs up. I have a BTL and its a fab little prop, fully renovated and has had a 20 yrs old in it without complaint from either side for 2 years.

Well how can you be helped if you don't like LL's. Who else are you going to rent from.

Did you study politics, social policy or economics?!

You are obsessed with BTLs as the source of why you face high rent now but there are a myriad of reasons for this.

For instance, the high demand and low supply of housing was also aggravated by the 'Right to Buy' legislation that sold off millions of the social housing stock.

The UK over the past few decades has gone through a massive increase in population and the number of households due to immigration, the rise in single parent households, more people living on their own, people living longer.

Govt policies have hindered the increase in housing to keep pace with population/household increases.

They also decimated pensions which meant that people decided to invest in residential property to secure a nest egg for their retirement.

Also, we have a culture that is obsessed with lifestyle and consumerism so many youngsters who in the past would have stayed at their parents or lived in cheap shared digs now feel entitled or compelled to have their own self contained property - this doesn't encourage the frugality to save towards a deposit to buy a place when single people with modest incomes decide they need to have their own place in the centre of town.

These explanations indicate why property has got expensive, and why the BTL phenomenon happened.

They should sound a lot more plausible than your conspiracy theory that thousands of greedy individuals decided to personally make your living expenses much higher than you deserve.
