  • I hope that the OP declares his position to any potential landlord so that he or she can decide whether or not to deal with him. I wouldn't.

  • If I recall correctly, both Hitler and Stalin had extensive property portfolios. Indeed, Hitler often collected rent personally from his tenants as he wanted to retain a personal connection with them. To a less extent, Mussolini and Shiro Ishii were landlords, but both only rented out houses that they could not sell.

Closer to the current day, Saddam Hussain had a varied BTL portfolio but much of it was destroyed in the two Gulf wars. Many of his tenants complained about missing walls and lack of basic amenities such as sewerage and running water. However, these complaints did not get very far as the tenants moved to another location with no forwarding addresses.

Pol Pott was widely known to be interested in BTL but was distracted from this ambition due to the hectic schedule fo returning his country back to year zero.
  • I commend you for wanting to avoid something you feel is unethical.

Similarly, many of us avoid producs and services where there may be foreign labour issues that make us uncomfortable or perhaps where there are ecological concerns or animal cruelty.

Of course, there are two sides to each argument and as individuals we should assess each situation for ourselves using our own feelings and moral judgements then make our own decisions and act on them.

Oh, god, I've just realised how evil I am. I'm a serial owner of tents.

I've got 3. I've still got my 20 year old pup tent, my partner moved in and already owned a dome tent, but we then selfishly splurged on one with a porch as we moved somewhere much wetter and its nice to have some storage space for cooking and drying.

I've just gone and pushed up the price of tents for the OP!

LOL the only person I know who's gone up the tent ladder, a tent ' extention' with a porch no less, you capitalist you, talk about increasing the value of your property :D

You could rent out your surplus tents and make money just to join the ' op hates me' gang.

I suppose it is extravagant having a portfolio of tents but if it's any consolation, I opted for a cheaper porch model because the cost/return ratio on another that had a bathtub floor for the 'annexe' just didn't work for me.

I also had a quandary on whether or not to retain my 20 year old Trangia single burner and go for a double gas burner because the latter means cooking is much quicker and the flame is more controllable. It's also much easier to find gas cans than bottles of meths.

But I did actually think it would be greedy to buy a new one when the old one functions okay. I suppose I could have compromised by buying the gas conversion unit for the Trangia.

It's so hard being ethical these days, isn't it?

seriuosly, get a life! Find a place you like, pay someone some rent and move in. Even trotski-ites like you gotta pay someone some rent, be jealous of the LL if you like, sit fuming in your rented house and throw darts at pictures of the rich.. Just give him the rent money and stop your pointless bleating.

A BTL portfolio holder of around 100 properties is is not likely to own them all - they'll be highly geared and it's the bank that"owns" them

The worst landlord I ever had in over a decade of renting wasn't the BTL ones who maintained their properties, acted civilly and viewed it like a business. It was the "can't sell the house for what I think it's worth up here in cloud cuckoo land (seriously he wanted £120k when stuff in the street is going for £90k) so I'll rent it" - viewed us as inconveniences, couldn't get rid of the emotional attachment aspect of "his" house (I've probably phrased that badly but you get what I mean) and was just a pillock at the best of times... others come off much worse than me with amateur landlords.

Yeah there are some BTL sleaze merchants - but a good one who knows the law and their obligations with regard to maintenance etc is much likely to make your life hell than an amateur viewing letting you pay the mortgage for their negative equity old house as a priviledge to grant you and you as some kind of slave to them.
