OAP drivers

I've been stuck behind an OAP driver once too often. They have to be amongst the worst drivers on the road.
In all honesty I think after a certain age people should have to re sit the driving test. I think it's a fact older people have slower reaction times. They are a danger to themselves and others.0 -

Baseball bunnet back to front sitting there looking thru the steering wheel and cursing everything in front. Get a life son, don't take someone elses.
Really you drive that fast!!!
I think everyone should be driving no more than 10mph if only to annoy a certain someone.0 -

And let's not forget that speed limits are decided arbitarily. If the local authority decides to change a 40 to a 5, does that instantly make everyone who goes over that speed a homicidal maniac?
No they are not. Speed limits cannot be changed at the whim of the local authority - set rules and procedures must first be followed.0 -
It's nice to see someone has a sense of humour on the site
It almost makes up for the lack of common sense shown by some posters her. a road could have had the same speed limit for the last 30 years. Yet over that time there have been massive advances made in car and road safety.
Some of these car advances include: airbags, crumple zones, seat belts, ABS.
Advances made in road design include: passively safe sign posts and lighting columns, high friction surfacing, safety barrier
I used to drive a 1978 MGB GT. I can assure everyone here the breaking distances required by that car were a lot greater than a modern car.
That's the thing with common sense though, you can't really teach someone it. Just remember to tell your families that you never break the limit and that 20mph is fast enough in a thirty. They might sit you down though and have a conversation about if you really need your car.
Again I wish to make clear that excessive speeding is wrong, however 5-10 mph over the limit in good conditions with little traffic on the road is ok.0 -
I think most 'bad' driving is a matter of intent - granted SOME OAPs may be too slow / annoying / downright dangerous, BUT I doubt they intend to be, whereas the fact remains that petrolhead boy racers who think they're immortal are the ones crashing into walls and rolling themselves into fields because they DELIBERATELY choose to drive like morons and endanger others to boot.
Not a week goes by without hearing about another 'tragedy' involving a souped-up car full of youngsters....."I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0 -

I would have it so:
a) The original driving test to be more comprehensive. Should include night driving, motorway driving, navigating across town and the like (i.e. a test of real world driving). And skid pans.
b) Drivers should be restricted to the number of attempts to pass the test, say 3 attempts in 7 years. Someone who needs 10+ attempts to pass a test is clearly not competent, and will eventually pass by luck rather than skill.
c) Have resits every 5 years - nothing too severe, just to make sure they are still competent.
d) Allow the police to stop anyone driving like a numpty and ask them 10 random highway code questions - get 3 or more wrong and its resit test time!
e) Have a special, optional, advanced test where people who pass can display a gold star. This will mark them as an excellent driver, and their reward will be things like being able to drive at whatever speed they see fit given their brilliant driving abilities and assessment of the conditions.0
