I have not bothered at all before but I have just hunted around and found the "Ignore Button"

Yes I shall do the same, you cannot debate with someone with his attitude.

i find it doubtful that any driver in the UK hasn't broken the speed limit.

taking your argument that speed causes deaths on the roads means we should reduce the existing speed limits? what do you think it should be reduced to? 20mph? 10mph? walking speed?
  • The speed limit in my area for residential roads is already 20 mph and this is being introduced around the uk so best start getting used to it now.

And yes in hindsight is a good idea specially where cars are parked on both sides of the road.

anyone interested can have a look on this at their reactions at 30 and 40mph. i managed to stop in time at 30 but not at 40. scary.

That is a very poor simulator. Do 30, dont press anything and, amazingly, you dont splatter the kid! At 35 pressing as soon as the screen comes on you hit the kid regardless.

If that was supposed to stop people speeding it is pathetic

from my driving experience i propose that -

Women are unintentionally dangerous and as a result cause accidents
Men are intentionally dangerous and as a result cause accidents

That's because there's nothing to press!

I agree that it's a hopeless simulator, though. If they have the figures correct then the visualisation is way out.

99.999% of drivers break the speed limit. I'm amazed that the tiny proportion of drivers that have never broken the speed limit seem to be posting on this thread.

don't get me wrong, i don't think it acceptable to break the speed limit in all conditions. but on a clear road with no other traffic and no parked cars etc i think it acceptable to break the limit. and on the journey home from work today i saw most drivers going slightly over the limit. you think they should all be banned? maybe they should all be jailed as well?

if you are so concerned about road safety can we all agree that OAP's should have their reaction times tested? after all it's a well known fact that older people have slower reaction times. if stopping people with slower reaction times saves children getting run over it has to be a good thing.

Perhaps you should try and drive safely within the speed limit in all circumstances. Speed limits are in place for a reason. Just because other drivers go over the limit, why follow. If you knock someone over at 30mph you will injur them, at 35mph you could kill them, would you want this on your conscience for the rest of your life?

Why be impatient with people that drive slowly.. yes it can be irritating when someone is poodling along, just find your spot and overtake them (within the speed limit of course) and without intimidating them.

I think you would benefit from a Speeding Awareness Course, that'll change your mind.

And by the way, I would think that emergency service drivers have had extensive training (which is ongoing in their job) on how to drive safely and at speed as well as the usual driving test, don't you think?

so the fact that it shows that at 35 you can't actually stop in time is pathetic?

it's not a computer game, it's an illustration of how long it takes to brake. it doesn't need amazing graphics.

and it's by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents so i'd just going to guess that they got the numbers right.

it makes a point. if anyone having a go thinks that they are magically able to stop faster than the rules of physics, then there's nothing anyone can say.

Perhaps another way of looking at people driving far too slowly is the corresponding problems this caused to emergency vehicles. A line of 30 cars stuck behind a slow OAP because of double white centre lines will cause a huge problem for emergency vehicles travelling in the same direction.

Speed of itself does not cause accidents. Driving badly for the road conditions does, whatever your speed.

Modern brakes are a lot better at stopping vehicles well within the listed stopping distances. Except perhaps Chelsea Tractors.

    fair enough, but:

Excessive speed contributes to 28% of collisions in which someone is killed, 18% of crashes resulting in a serious injury and 12% of all injury collisions.

Approximately two-thirds of all crashes in which people are killed or injured happen on roads with a speed limit of 30 mph or less. At 35 mph a driver is twice as likely to kill someone as they are at 30 mph.

fwiw, if there is a long line of cars 'in the way' of an emergency vehicle, then perhaps they should move to the side of the road and out the way ;)
