That's a question for your MP, they're responsible for the law, not the shop worker.I get ID'd quite a bit because I look about 15, but I was suprised to get ID'd for rizla in poundland... I asked what he does if someone tries to buy post-it notes, afterall their both paper with a sticky strip. I don't mind getting ID'd though I'd feel horrible if someone lost their job because of me!I'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0 -
I can't think why a nice, respectful person like you was ever singleI got asked for ID in morrisons when i was doing my weekly shop (I was single at the time, and shopping on my own is so depressing!) for 1 bottle of wine.
I didnt have any, and he said he couldnt sell me the wine. I told him I couldnt buy the food without it and left all the shopping on the belt and walked off..... he had fun putting it all back i betI'm not bad at golf, I just get better value for money when I take more shots!0 -

When I asked what I could possibly get up to with a Mail on Sunday the cashier replied that it had just come up on her computer screen that she had to ask, but she assumed it was because it was 'close to Bonfire night'?! Never did work that one out....
I've had a pop up on my till asking to check ID for some spoons! I had a little laugh about it with the customer and just ignored it...common sense with somethings.
I have refused people in the past when buying cigs, 90% of them don't mind, and often say its always when they forget their ID (no idea if its true or not), the ones that play up I can pretty much guarantee that they are underage...just to wind them up a little bit more, I'll phone over to the kiosk in the main store to warn them about them xD.
I would rather refuse to serve someone and annoy them, then sell something to someone underage and risk the fine/criminal record. What is pi? Where did it come from?0 -
One problem being the majority of people not involved with age restricted items do not realise the fines/liability on members of staff themselves.
If I worked in these areas I would be very careful:p0 -
Was in Asda with a couple of friends at the weekend, my mate who is 29 was buying some cigs and his misses walked over and stood next to him, the women serving then grabbed the cigarets and demanded ID ....... from her !! , she asked what on earth she is being ID'd for and the women said because he 'could be buying them for her' !! (she is 29 as well ....)
She actually had produce her driving license so that her fella could buy his own cigarets ( he wasn't ID'd by the way).
Only in Asda !!
Ridiculous isn't it?! Do these places want our money or not?
A similar thing happened to me in Tesco. My friend was buying alcohol, I was just standing next to her. She was 19 at the time, and I was 23. We were BOTH asked for I.D, but the alcohol was nothing to do with me! They wouldn't serve her, even though she had her I.D.
I also read about a woman in a magazine was in her 40s. She went to the supermarket with her daughter (in her 20s). They were buying food and wine. But the cashier asked the mother for I.D. She didn't have any, so the daughter said that she had her I.D. The cashier refused in case the daughter gave the alcohol to her mother!
However, I can sort of understand me & my friend getting IDed... I suppose. A bit OTT though. But when it comes to people in their 30s and 40s, come on, have some common sense! I've worked in pubs for years, and it's really not that difficult to tell the difference between a teen and a middle aged woman.0 -
I was asked for I.D just a couple of weeks ago. I was on a night out for my 30th birthday!
Was also asked for I.D in Asda last summer. We were going on a family picnic and had forgotten cutlery so went to buy some plastic forks, spoons and knifes and got asked for I.D LOL! I wouldn't mind but the knifes were worse than useless and broke when I tried to cut a tomato...
My friend is 24 and was with her husband and 2 kids in the supermarket last summer. They wouldn't let her buy a barbeque!0 -
I get ID'd quite often, which is fine (im 27). When they look at me dubious I even offer them ID. The only time it really annoys me is when they are not polite about it and talk to you like you are doing something illegal. Whats wrong with "can i see you ID please" rather than "im not selling you this until I see some ID"
Also nearly not got sold some booze as my "friend" looked under age. Took me a while to realise my "friend" was actually another customer behind me, who i didnt know at all.Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!0 -
Why do the notices state id may be asked for if you appear under 25 yet one can buy drink when 18?
What has age 25 got to do with anything?0 -

It's obvious when you think about it.
People can look a lot older than they are, and also a lot younger. I'm 26 but look about 17. My partner is 20, but looks about 25.
If someone looks 25, the chances are that they're 18 or over, so it gives a safety net to the cashier.
If you are looking for someone who looks 18, it's a much more vague system and you can easily get it wrong.0
