  • Have you checked the calculation to make sure that it is correct? The levy should only be charged on labolur-only subbies, so might be worth checking to see if yours are really supply & fix.

Also you can pay by instalments, I believe. Finally are there any other grants you can claim?

What sort of grants do they do? the only thing we get is the grant for the Apprentice that we have. Thats another reason I am so cross, they have never explained that we can get anything from them!

Yes we are CIS registered and it is likely that the cost of subbies is labour only.

The total amount is £87K - if I had known about this thieving 'tax on a tax' I would have not done some of the work that we did (some of the work I arrange is literally just a few £'s - certainly not worth having this extra payment)

Do you know whether I can not pay it because of out company closing down or is it like HMRC and they can do anything they like?

(as I said I am not paying is whatever, but I suppose it would make my life easier if I could legitimately not pay it!)
You would need to take expert legal advice on that one life, I doubt many people on here would have the specific expertise to advise correctly and if they did it would be nearly impossible to filter out the expert posts from the rest.

  • We have not registered with the above, but we have recived a bill, can they do this?

There was a statutory requirement for Companies in the construction industry to pay the levy once they had reached the £80k pa threashold.

I am a little out of touch with the rules surrounding the CITB levy but will ask around.

Your accountant should be able to asdvise you or put you in touch with someone who can.

Do you mean me? I didnt make anywhere near £80K on my subbies and employer. you couldnt possibly double up what you contract people out for - you would never get any work.

Of course I made a profit, I accounted for it and paid tax on it. I dont just have an endless supply of money waiting to pay any tom !!!!!! or harry that decides they want a piece of me!

Would you be able to find an extra £1200 from your wages last year? More to the point, would you happily pay it even if you did have it?
  • Bit of a shocker but the scheme is well advertised and clear on their site. All construction employers with salary bill of £80k+ are liable, whether they register with CITB or not, or get grants or not.

I don't think you've got much hope of avoiding this. They do accept monthly payments, so call them to make an arrangement. If you don't you'll get charged interest as well.

Double check this assessment is correct though - as you were a partnership at the time you should know that partners wages should not be included - that might be enough to drop you below the limit again.

However directors wages are included, so be careful next year, try and keep your subs bills a bit lower.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.

That may be so, but would only be relevent if you were looking at their site! I am busy working and generally do not spend time browsing the site of somewhere that I have no interest in..

As I said it is a matter of principle. I feel completely cheated and I wont pay it.

No - havent included our wages.

I probably wont have a business to be honest. I have been ill recently and am on the verge of splitting with OH (who I run the business with. This is kind of the last straw. Everyone just wants more and more money and it simply isnt worth the stress, hassle and long working hours.

They can take a running jump for 'their' money. They arent getting a bean from me.

    :(
