I'm in the process of claiming bank charges from HSBC having received all my back statements from them. Looking through the statements I note that there are a number of debited interest charges amounting to some £90 over two years - is it legitimate to claim these interest charges in addition to the debited bank charges? Grateful for any advice.

Good and helpful website.
If it's 'overdraft interest' no this cannot be claimed back

Using Martin's template letter I wrote to HSBC and got the following response:Dear Mr ....
Thank you for your request with regard to information about transactions and charges/fees on your account.
We note you did not request copy statements, however, this is the only format in which the bank holds the information you require. For this reason copy statements have been enclosed.
We are happy to cover and fees for the production of this information and we return your payment.
If you require more information, please let us know.
Yours sincerely,
Angela C Harries

So, forgetting that little lack of common courtesy, I plowed through the statements and worked out my charges. I haven't paid as much as I thought I had, but each instance on the statement is listed simply as "CHARGES UP TO [DATE]". There are various instances of charges of £18, £27.50, £36, £54 and £72 scattered throughout.
As they claim not to be able to let me know what these charges actually were for, should I simply claim for the lot?
Thanks

Hi All,
I received my full and final settlement letter which i have sent back signed. On the letter it states that the funds will be credited to my account within the next 14 days. Does anyone know if this is taking the full 14 days to be credited or is it taking less? I would be interested to see what timescales you have all had.0 -

The template letter was clearly not read as it, of course, didn't ask about transactions and did say I'd accept copy statements.

Are there no references or codes at the side of the charges ? As to any clue of what they might be ?

Hi Soupie. The amounts you have listed are the same as I have had on my statements. I added up all my charges from my online statements and all of these amounts were listed as 'total charges' and can range from £18 to £125. As far as I am aware these are for going over your agreed overdraft limit. However, I am not entirely certain how they calculate these though. I've been trying to find this out online and cannot seem to find a definite answer! I will let you know if /when I do. And yes, I think you can and should claim for the lot!
Good luck!
**Having now made some more enquiries online I think the old charges were £18 each time you went over your overdraft in a month, so if you went over your overdraft once and then spent against it again and again, they would add £18 for each time this happened. £125 is the maximum they can charge in any one month.
Hope this helps.0 -

hi all.
i was charged £150 in one month !!!
My statement s dont give me breakdown either just listed as total charges.
(arrangement fee i think is what they put now) im sure i never agreed to that sort of arrangement fee. They cant even say that the charges i incur are due to telephone call s or letters to me as i don t receive any its just on my statement each month.
desperaate lou xIts been the longest three months..... success is nearly insight:T ....... Money in account :beer:0 -
I received my offer from HSBC 17 May, they had acknowledged my claim at this point for £1720 + interest. I accepted £1520 which they credited to my account on 5th June.
Then they took it out again on the same day!!! HSBC Customer Complaint won't deal with me as it's "referred to legal" - and guess what, can't get thro' to them either!
HSBC have now since defended the claim and I'm waiting for my court papers to arrive.
Thought it was too easy!!0 -
Oh no! How can they do this? Did they not send you a letter with the offer stating without prejudice etc? Reading something like this worries me  The way my luck is going lately they'll probably do the same to me!!
Had you already started down the court route or did they give you this offer after the 8 week period?

I'm not sure if they can do this, but they have! They sent the offer with the covering letter "without prejudice" - standard response from what I can gather. I'm sure if it ends up going to court then the fact that it shows on my statements they've paid up will count for something against them.
I had already started a claim on Mcl, they had acknowledged the claim. Seems to me part of the problem is HSBC Customer complaints and Legal working on the case together without any communication between the two. Why doesn't that surprise me?!0
