I worked in the PC industry a few years ago and at that time there were only 2 manufacturers who had the ability to produce LCD screens (at that time for pc monitors). The screens are then shipped to the manufacturers who put together the monitor/tv. Remember we're talking about the actual screen technology, not the rest of the 'box'.

How much was the 40" again which was sold a while back? Can anyone remember?

It was £849 and worth every penny.:j :j
  • Well the sony PSP uses one of 2 panels, either samsung or sharp, there are also LG Panels and god knows how many more.

I find it hard to believe that anyone who worked in the PC industry would not only believe, yet suggest that there are only 2 manufacturers.

Well Sony uses Samsung's LCD panels as an example there are so many re-branded items out there.

You would probably end up paying 25-40% more for a Sony over a Samsung - when infact the technology is the same.

Not sure if there are only two but there are very few manufacturers of the actual LCD panels. Most Television manufacturers buy in the panels and build a TV around them. However aSony TV is still different to a Samsung even though they may use the same panel because the electronics that control the panel are different and each TV manufacturer uses proprietary technology to try and improve the image on their TVs.

  • I would advise people to buy the Teco from Techfever, as it's a great TV for the price. It's got excellent reviews on the av forums, as well as on aria. Teco actually make the panels for Sony and Viewsonic. I've bought one of these and it's got great picture quality and excellent specifications. Only slight problem is that they are out of stock at Techfever at the moment, Stock's due in tomorrow, apparently.

Perhaps I wasn't clear - 1) I said at that time so things may be different now.
    2) the only aspect I was refering to is the screen. As has been pointed out since different manufacturers will have different electronics etc.

I don't think it's that far fetched to believe - you really think sony, IBM, HP etc manufacture every component they use?
